Phone virus?

I installed a bunch of new apps last week and my phone started acting strange. Little things like... Screens will minimize randomly, the keyboard will randomly disappear, also lots of ads.

I deleted all those new apps I put on. I ran Avast Antivirus and MalWareBytes and it found nothing.

Any idea what I should try next?

Reset your phone. There a lot of apps on the play store that Google has removed due to issues like this. What phone do you have?

LG V30.

Won't that delete all my stuff? (Pictures, text messages, contacts).

Yes but you should be able to get the LG app to back up all your stuff such as contacts, photos, messages etc to your computer. If your antivirus and anti malware programs haven't picked anything up then re-setting your phone is really the only way to go.

Okay. The only LG apps I can find are TV remotes

Your cell provider should have an app that will back up your messages, pics, whatever. Since its android, your gmail account will have your contacts backed up. You can hook the phone up to your pc and transfer pics if need be. If you need text messages saved, I recommend using the sms backup and restore app through the play store.

I uploaded using that app. It uploaded to my Google Drive as an .xml file. Is that something I will be able to retrieve later?

How do I do the reset?

Yeah just download it from drive and import it back using the app again.
How do I do the reset?
Method 1#

  • Go to settings and tap on General
  • Select the option Back up & Reset
  • Now choose ‘Factory data reset’
  • Tap on ‘Reset Phone’ and finally choose the option ‘Delete all’
  • The process will take few minutes depending on how much data you have on the device. Once done, you will have to set it up from scratch.
Method 2#

In case the phone becomes totally unresponsive and you can’t access the settings menu, this method is the best. The steps to perform a hard reset on LG V30 are explained below.

  • First turn off the device completely by pressing down the Power button for few seconds
  • Once turned off, press and hold the Power and Volume down button altogether
  • After few seconds you will notice the LG logo on the screen. Let go the Power key then but continue holding the Volume Down. Wait for just 2 seconds and again hold down the Power key
  • You will notice the Recover screen
  • Release all keys
  • Use the Volume button to select the option you want and the power button for confirmation
  • Two options will be there on the screen, Yes and NO, select the option ‘Yes’ and confirm it using Power key
  • Next, you will see a message on the screen that says ‘Erase all the data and restore default settings’. Select and confirm that option using Volume down and the power button. The device will restart.

All done. Thank God it backed up my Calendar for me. I forgot about that one.

Google backs up pretty much everything. I've had my phone brick itself and when I replaced it I didn't even notice anything missing despite not having backed my stuff up on my own.
