Torn about Building New PC for Gaming

Hi Everyone,

I am currently running an 6600k @ 3.7 Ghz with 16 GB DDR4 and a 1070 ti 8 GB. I love the PC I have but recently games like Battlefield V are recommending i7's or AMDs Ryzen 7 2700x.

I have always used Intel for the past 10 years but I was just going to purchase an AMD 2700x as its 8 Core 16 threads. As I was preparing to buy it I saw Benchmarc for Battlefield 5 and I saw the 9600k has a much better frame rate. For gaming which direction do you think I should go?

I am not big into overclocking because I feel it wears and tears the equipment quicker so I am taking that into account.

So which direction should I go? Should I go for the 9600k or the Ryzen 7 2700x? I do not do video editing or stream my games.

Thanks!

First I want to address overclocking and wear; not once have I had a CPU die. AMD or Intel. I still have Q6600 [email protected] and my Phenom 2 555 [email protected] today. My i7-2600K [email protected] still runs too.
You just have to be responsible with the voltage, and usually you can squeeze quite a few hundred MHz extra with the stock voltage.

Secondly the 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs are coming Soon and offer high frequencies finally. Personally I'm eyeing the Ryzen 7 3700X, a 12-core with a 5GHz turbo out of the box. Of course we don't have official pricing, but it looks like it should be about the same as the 2700X currently is.

So if you are not in a rush, I would try and squeeze your current CPU up to 4.2-4.4GHz if needed and wait for the new Ryzens.

Overclocking has no tangible impact on life on CPU's, although I'd argue it does for GPU's. Agreed with everything above. Intel is currently better for strictly gaming, but not by a whole lot, and that'll likely change with this new generatoin.

Hi Jiniix and Darren, Thank you for the reply. Yeah I think I can wait out for a few more months. I guess I can toy with the overclocking a bit. It looks like the 3rd gen should come out in June?

You think its worth the wait?

According to the released specs and prices it is definitely worth the wait.

Thanks! I just overclocked to 4.2 Ghz and im playing Battlefield V. CPUz is not really telling me my temps though. Is there a program you guys recommend?

Hey guys thanks a lot! My computer is running at 40C under load in BFV so I am going to keep this CPU until the next generation. I cant justify spending the money for a 20 percent increase.

Thank you all very much!
