I have a 7 year old desk top that I'm thinking of upgrading or replacing completely, as it is beginning to struggle playing the newer games.

Being retired, I don't have a great deal of disposable income so I want to try and save money wherever I can.

I'm looking at the Ryzen 5 2600 or 2600x, but I was wondering about the AMD FX-8350 Black Ed Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz. Will I see any major difference if I go with the FX over the 2600? I realize I need to upgrade my motherboard as well.

Haven't built a computer in many years, so not up on the pros and cons.

Thanks.

Oh god don't even look at the Vishera or anything like that from AMD. You want to be on 2nd Gen Ryzen (or 3rd in the coming months). Former Vishera owner here, night and day difference between the two. :)

You'll want 16GB of DDR4 RAM too, preferably 3200MHz in 2x8GB.

Thanks Darren, I appreciate your input. Had a feeling I'd be better off going the 2600 route but wanted to make sure I covered my bases. Nice to hear from someone who actually had the Vishera.

Oh yeah I knew those chips inside and out, overclocked and tweaked heavily for a few years. Done the same with my Ryzen 1700 now too.

Not sure your timetable, but Ryzen 3rd gen is coming over the next few months and might be worth waiting. The 2600 would serve you well too though.

I recently built a new Ryzen 2600X system. First AMD system in twenty years and I couldn't be happier with it. Really glad to see AMD back in the competition.

I think I"ll wait and see about the 3rd gens. If they are out of my price range, maybe it will help drop the prices on the gen 2s.

Again, thank you for your input. I appreciate it.

Thanks for replying Jevery. I currently am running an I5 system, but am thinking about going back to the AMDs. Prices are more reasonable.

Glad to hear the 2600x is a good choice.

Just saying the i5 9600k is faster than even the ryzen 7 2700x, cheaper, and just a better chip all the way around unless you go thread ripper, but then i have about 7 more intel processors that are a better buy, you aren't going up in proformance at all going to AMD from Intel despite what some AMD nerds try to tell you ‍‍o_O

I'd wait for their 3rd gen to drop and let others buy them and find out they fall just shy of being a decent processor. Then decide for yourself

Just my .02 before you doom yourself.

So you recommend the $270 9600K to somebody that's on a restricted budget and will never utilize the full processing power? You condemn the actions of others and then hypocritically shill for the other side.

The 2600X is more than adequate and $100 cheaper. In fact, it's on sale at Best Buy for $165. The 9600K carries a price premium that isn't worth it for someone on a budget.

I'm not even going to waste my breath with this guy. Apparently benchmarks, reviews, real world experience, and prices don't mean anything to some people.

Wait I have one more

I've said this before and I will say it again if you want to be cheap and get meh performance without having to overclock go AMD

If you got the pockets deep enough not to care and you don't want to be replacing your processor every two years and want great performance out of the box without having to overclock then go Intel.

Better to have it and not use it then need it and not have it

2600X, not 2700X. Nobody mentioned the 2700X. I like how you searched for the "i5-9700K" as that's definitely an i7 part.

You should remove the "E" from the i9-9960X in your signature, by the way.
Oh man, he really got me with those screenshots of prices and one very loose crowd sourced benchmark that explictly states the AMD pwns in multithreaded workload and is about 10 percent behind single threaded. Those rankings are completely meaningless. The R7 would crush the i5 in absolutely any workload except strictly single threaded loads and games. And even then not by much.

Oh you poor souls.

So do you want to look like complete fools anymore or should I just stop here

You're also comparing an i5 with an R7. Do you even know how these product stacks work?

Also I'm not going to even entertain the "having deep pockets" comment. Just... wow.

Literally that's all you got...... that is all you can pick a part..... uhh i said 2700x cause thats the best ryzen has out, which is destroyed by the cheaper I5, aside from thread ripper.

Don't even get me started on the i7

Hi, leg warehouse? Yeah, Mr. Omni and Mr Darren needs something to stand on... oh So, nothing for them to stand on? Ok, thanks so much. Sorry guys ‍♂️

If only he was using it for multi threading applications.... you 2 specifically provide shit information for what people ask for, As the OP specifically asked for something for GAMING which Mr. darren you just proved my suggestion of the i5 being better than even the 8 core 2700x. For cheaper...

Pretty sure one or both of you work for AMD

I'm all for spirited debate but come on, maybe cool it with the snide personal comments? I thought I graduated high school already. You clearly have some personal stock in this and I just don't have the energy for militant fanboys anymore.

Feel free to check my post history or ask anyone around here. On a strictly gaming usage I will recommend Intel. If they do gaming plus other stuff that would benefit from the cores/power, then they'd be foolish to gimp themselves in all those areas for an extra 5-10% frames that are likely bottlenecked by other constraints like the GPU. He's looking at midrange hardware, the cutting bleeding edge isn't apparent until you're on the fastest GPU's and then you'll see those precious few frames your expensive CPU bought you. Me? I'll take the product that's good at everything since I do more on my computer than play video games. And guess what, even when I do it still does just great. :) 2 full years later even, on an AMD chip. Imagine that.

$100 more for 12 percent higher overall performance. Not worth it. The gap in performance shrinks as resolution increases, by the way. There isn't much disparity when comparing AMD and Intel at 4K.

I own the i5-8400, just so you know.

In pure budget gaming, AMD is king, currently.

you have said it all and then said it again.dreck both times.it seems to be getting rarer to find someone who will think before they speak (post).why dont you go write a book about what you dont know.looks more and more like a troll in our midst.

Like I said OP, regardless of what the AMD nerds try to tell you, the I5 8600K is going to be your best buy for several reasons including the fact that it fits your motherboard it will be cheaper than going to ryzen. And guessing what i5 you have is most likely a 35% upgrade.

And again,
Personally, because its release is in a few months, I would wait for the ryzen 3000 Series to fall flat on its face before making a decision of what to do.

These dudes just like to try to argue with me because none of them like me and it's been that way ever since I joined in 2010. I can say the sky is blue and they will come spew out some bullshit why its actually green.

Aside from that I'm done with this circus
