A recent ransomware email...variations on a theme.

I clean out my spam box every week or so. Usually 40 to 60 spams in it. This one caught my eye as it was a variation of a ransomware email I got a few months ago.

Lets see, Facebook banned me, LinkedIn banned me, I cover up the laptop cams with gaffers tape and I have no friends. Looks like all he / she / it is going to get it practice. And being an old, white, straight, male underground photographer, I'm snubbed by the art world / curators / galleries like a homeless man offering them a sack of sh... So, I'd welcome ANY notoriety of ANY kind.

People are sooooo desperate nowadays. (Once in a while the spammers pay off. I got the title to one of my books from a Nigerian spammer.)

Nothing new to me. I've seen quiet a few of these. Had an email the other day saying, they installed malware on my machine, saw a collection of porn, I had good taste, I was watched through my webcam (which I don't even have), they collected all my passwords, don't try to find me, and send me 1,000 in Bitcoins or all my private data will be aired. All while using a domain that looked almost like my own privately ran email servers name except for the fact it was a sub-domain. (For example name @ computerforums . com . info.

There are even a few people that get emails with Facebook account pointed too or various other accounts placed in these type of emails to try and add to the scare tactics. What happens is sometimes people get access to a website with a good bit of meta data stored on them (such as your Facebook account a user linked), grabs the stored e-mail used on the account linked from creation and creates a quick SMTP/forwarding server to make it more of a scare tactic. Place that data on there with a email address that you can't reply back to and boom square individuals handing over money via Bitcoin.

Honestly, some of the lessons someone should take from this is try not to link accounts as much as possible & for sure don't use the same password everywhere if linking accounts.

I fear that I am left out, I never get stuff like this. lol. And I am glad that I don't. But I have had friends that have. I know it sad that some poor misinformed person gets crap like this. I keep harping on my friends and family about security and such on the internet.

I've received some of those and they even contained leaked data from sites that were hacked/dumped.

I'm certainly not going to pay $2k so someone doesn't see my wiener. They probably already have anyway .

It depresses me that people are both self conscious about that, that they actually fall for btc/target gift card ransoms, and also that the initiator has a retarded scare tactic story that lacks inspiration.

I miss it back when my scams were UNIQUE AND INTERESTING. None of that uninspired crap the kids do these days.
