Video Resolution

If that monitor is LCD, then I wouldn't suggest to set other resolution than the LCD's native resolution. At other resolutions the monitor will stretch the image to fit the screen, but the image will be very crappy.

Certainly not..

I would avoid doing that at all costs. Why do you think the supported resolutions exist? It's because the monitors only support those given resolutions perfectly. Do it at your own risk.

Is it ok to set the video card to a resolution the monitor doesnt support?
Go ahead! If the monitor doesnt support it then it simply wont display anything (thus nullifying the purpose of a monitor) :p

Well thats the thing my 5700U will let it display at 2048 by 1536. I'm just worried that my monitor will melt or somthing. The highest res it supports is 1280 by 1024.

Damn near every video card supports 2048x1536 ... damn near no monitors support it tho

im running my desktop @ 1024*768 100hz...not sure of its limits though. My laptop is only 1400*1050 60hz (doesn't go past 60hz...not sure why) seems kinda weird it only lets me go with 60hz.

The refresh rate makes no difference on LCD screens, because the pixels are permanently lit, not scanned by the electron beam like in CRTs.

I used only once the 2048 x 1536 and just for testing the monitor. But there's no way to read a thing when on that resolution, so I currently use 1600 x 1200. It's more than enough for a decent image.

So refresh rate doesn't matter on a laptop? I didn't know that...my mom's compaq has options of 60-75hz, maybe hers isn't LCD??? o well...it's still a crisp image at 60hz.
