If you have an old monitor (not LCD) than the computer screen will get 'burnt' on the actual monitor screen. It happens with any projection tv's and monitors. I was just watching a movie with a big screen projection tv with a burnt screen...very annoying. That is why some people say that you shouldn't play video games on projection TV's becuase some images [for example: the place where a game shows how much ammo you have left] for the whole game, and some poeple play games for 3 hours at a time.

most web servers are not different to a normal pc and they run 24/7
Unless there is a reason for it, I reckon it is a waste of electricity.

i had a maxtor 15 gig i left that thing on for about 3 years and never had one problem still this day it runs as good as new the only thing that i turn off is my monitor i leave it on stand by but if your concernd about the hard disk you can OPT to put those on stand by 2

also i was told in school that it takes more enegry to turn it on than it does
to keep it on thats why i just ran extra fans and leave it on :D

only time leaving your computer on 24/7 is going to hurt is if your paying the bills, lol, I would also set my monitor to go to stand by, or you can just turn your monitor off, also if your not paying your bills just set the screen saver to blank but I agree this is a huge waste of electricity but ofcourse Im paying the bill hehe.

It's actually tecnically better to leave your computer on. To power up the PC uses more electricity than to have it run and be idle. So by turning it on and off, you are constently adjusting the amount of power being shoved into it. By keeping it on, it keeps everything regulated.

If you have a non-LCD monitor, make sure that it goes to standby after a certain amount of time. Or simply turn it off.

u risk getting ur home burn down if it is unattended. i would leave it next to something that will reduce fire like on a metal table or something not easy to catch fire or right under a water sprinkler or a fire alarm :D

Yeah

I am not a fan of having the PC on 24/7. That could explain why I never (knock on wood) had any failures. I would think that turning it on when you are using it or know you will use it soon is fine. However, having it on non-stop is not right. Anything could happen and you could just not be at home. If that would not happen, you would be spending a lot of money extra on electricity.

a pc doesnt use too much electricity, which is dirt cheap anyway lol :D

what about servers. I run a few servers from my desktop, and my media center

err.... That not really much of an issue. I mean if you start worrying that all your electrical goods are suddenly going to burst into flames when your not looking then you'll have to turn of your frigde, your freezer, your tv (and not just on standy), your vcr, your dvd player, your hi fi (and not just on standby), your boiler (if electric). And a pcs wattage probably places it towards the middle to bottom of that short list.
It not really worth considering.

parts like the power supply only last a certain number of hours, and i would guess that after a while it would wear out the other parts. I would say only leave it on if you need to, and there is a high electricity bill (especially on custom comps).

and there is a high electricity bill
i suppose it matters what you call high. i would say about $25 a month max. Remember that it will be idling most of the time. And you turn your monitor off

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/2404 have a few calculations that may interest you. They're not perfect but they give a good impression

parts like the power supply only last a certain number of hours
dont think it work like that, they calculate this number of hours by turning it on and off at the average rate. Its like a light bulb, they give you the number of hours it will run but that is based on the bulb being turned on and off an average number of times. If you never turn it off it will outlast the average hours (barring any power surge)

depends, on computers like dell, hp, sony, ect, when its on standby all the fans turn off and everything uses less power, so in that case it would be much cheaper, but custom comps (one's that i've built and my friends have made), when you put it on standby it just turns off the monitor, all the fans are still spinning, so i think they use more.
