Laptop problem

When using my old laptop, a Toshiba laptop, after a while, the screen just goes off. The computer is still running but the screen just turns to black. I find that putting the lid down or pressing a small button in the corner, which turns the screen black anyway. What can I do, and what is wrong with it?

I will be very grateful for any help at all.
Thanks

The ribbon for the monitor is probably shorting out or just loose. There's probably not much you can do other than replace the LCD if it's shorting out. If it's just loose, you should be able to open the case and reseat the cable.

could be something messed up with the on off switch, you mentioned the little button in the corner, something could be wrong with that causing the computer to think the lid is closed when it's not thus shutting off the monitor, check and make sure nothing is holding that down.

No, there isn't anything holding it down. When you press that several times though, it does bring the screen back up.

Thanks for your help

Go to Power Options and there should be an option that says what to do when u close the lid. Try that and see if it works.
