compatible or incompatible memory?

two questions here:

1) on my motherboard, there are slots for both ddr and ddr2, can I install both kinds of memory on there at the same time or will it cause problems?

2) I've also got a sony vaio that came with pc3200 installed on it. I recently tested pc2100 on it, and it recognized it, now will it cause any problems to have both types of ram installed on it?

1) never seen a mobo that supports both ddr and ddr2 ram, well there is one, but it takes a whole add-on card to support ddr2 and that is because it supports both AM2 and socket 939, but that is a different story. What motherboard do you have?

2) No there will not be any incompatibility issues with that. However I would not suggest it. When you mix RAM's of different speeds it slows all of the ram down to the slowest RAM of the bunch. Also it may effect if you are running dual channel, like if you want from 2 pc 3200 sticks to 3 sticks, 2 x pc 3200 and 1x pc 2100. I would just stick with the pc 3200 and if you really want more ram you can get pc 3200 pretty cheap.

There are quite a few boards that support DDR and DDR2, and no, you can't mix them together.

to me it makes no sense for boards to support both and its kind of a waste of slots...you can't mix them but if you put 4 DDR2 sticks in they will run at DDR speeds thats if it only has 4 slots

The ASRock DualSataII S939 mobo supports both DDR and DDR2, though you can only use DDR2 if you're using the AM2 CPU addon card. And never use both DDR and DDR2, so far no board can use the both kinds of memory at the same time.

Physically impossible, cause DDR2 is 240-pin while DDR is 184-pin. And even if you manage to get DDR2 ram into the 2 DDR DIMM slots you would face a bunch of problems. How would you setup the voltage properly for instance? Cause DDR2 uses 1.8V to 2.1V (depending on brand and model) while DDR uses 2.5V and a bit higher (again depending on brand and model).

Ya that is the only board that I have seen that supports both.

nevermind, I found out that I can't use both ddr and ddr2 at the same time. My motherboard model is ecs elite p4m800pro-m (1.0)
