why does pci have greater fps than agp?

This is PCI EXPRESS. It's the latest and best interface for new video cards now and is better than AGPx8.

I was about to drop about $400 on a video card (6800gt) but I only have a agp 4x slot in my comp. should I hold off til I get a new mobo (1 year from now) or buy a cheap card now?

P.S. Anything would be better than my mx 420.

agp 4x will hold you back quite a bit using a 6800gt. To get the most out of the card it's best that the mobo has agp 8x or pci-e.

Latest yes. Best arguable. That extra bandwidth hasnt been really used yet.

I ran a X800Pro on a 4X AGP board a few months back ... works fine (goes to show how much of that extra bandwith is actually used)

agp 4x will hold you back quite a bit using a 6800gt. To get the most out of the card it's best that the mobo has agp 8x or pci-e.

Only when you go to benchmarks ... the bottleneck isnt exaclty the interface but the system and mobo that use 4X AGP (i.e., you dont find FX55s running with AGP4x often)

It doesn't. The faster cards have better FPS, most of them just happen to use the PCIe interface.

really depends on the test bed and what kind of bench/game you are running. i dont think you would notice the difference in a game or anything...but some people are anal and run benchmarks like there life depends on it. they see 5 point difference and call that card superior or something ridiculous.

Also, bear in mind, when you look at the pretty graphs showing FPS, you won't be able to tell the difference when actually playing the game for anything above about 60 or 70 FPS or so. The ones with the Athlon64 3500 CPU and 6800 PCI-express graphics cards showing FPS of 170 basically means its got a lot in reserve for future games - The lower-specced cards running at 70 FPS will be just as playable, but may start to stuggle with tomorrows set of games. You've basically got to decide whether to get a kick-ass card and spend a bit more to future-proof yourself a bit, or spend a bit less, and think about up-grading again a bit sooner.

I just want something that will play all the games that are out right now (doom, far cry, hl2) close to max settings and will keep up with new games for at least 1.5 years for cheap. Is there such a thing? If not what is the closest thing to it? Is it in my list?

Best bang for the buck and for awesome performance i would get the 9800 Pro 256bit 128mb ddr.

Please keep in mind that I have one AGP 4x slot in my mobo 512mb of rdram and a 2.53gig P4 with 400mghz fsb.

the 6600GT is a really good card for the price. There is a PCIe on the list so watch what you buy if you are going to buy from those listed.
I'm a little curious/confused as to why mgoldb2 would take an x600(its #1) over anything other than an x300 or geforce 6200 and really confused as to why hes taking it over a 9800XT

It was half the price of the 9800XT and is it really double better? I might be wrong for taking the x600 over 9800 I really wasnt sure which ones of those are better.

edit: yeah I just relize the 9800 is also half the price of the 9800xt. This why I dont like taking price into account except when someone tells me a exact budget. Still by the time I got to the end of the list I was getting tired.

The 9800 is a better card let along the 9800Pro or 9800XT. The X600 for all intents and purposes is a PCIe version of the 9600Pro (notice how ATi simply remarks their cards ... 9500-->9600-->X600)

an x600 is like a PCIe 9600, I don't know too much about ATI stuff, but I think the x600 is basically a repackaged 9600 with slight changes to make it native PCIe
