i only have 1 cd rom drive and whenever i put a floppy into the drive and read its contents, my computer restarts, same with a cd if i put a cd into the drive it restarts i ran fix it utlities 5.0 system diagnostics of the floppy and cd drive but i needed to put a media into the drives so it can read it but it kept restarting before fix it could do anything...everything else works fine and it really isnt THAT necessary i guess but what if i need to install new software...

thanks

What operating system are you running? Unless someone else has a better idea, I'd say it's format/reinstall time.

Try booting from a bootable CD or floppy to determine whether you can access the drives...

What kind of power supply do you have? (and what are your basic specs) I wouldnt think the 3.3V rail on a floppy would be enough to reboot a system but if you're running a P4 or something on some 275W PSU that might just do it.

Hi, I'm having this problem to but not quite as bad as yours. Occasionaly when i put a CD in my CD-R/RW drive the PC would restart.
One of my friends also has this prob occasionaly but they have an much older PC and have a new Iomega 52x24x52 CD-R/RW drive.
My PC also restarted occasionaly when i pluged my Digital Camera into the PC using the USB cable.
Now the CD-R/RW drive's draw wont stay closed, and doesn't read any CDs. I've tried using the Open/Close button on the Drive and just pushing it closed but it still ejects a few seconds later.
Diletra, what brand is your Power Supply and CD drive?
If anyone could help me as well i'd appreciate it.

Do'h! Just looked down at my CD-R/RW drive then and saw the tray was actualy closed for once... 5min later it ejected and wont stay closed again!

Anyone got anyidea how to fix the drive or a site with a 'how to'? also anyone know what could be causing the PC to restart as in the above post.

You're absolutely sure the drive is physically ok? (i.e., there isnt somthing messed up with the ejection part)

For the cd drive I would uninstall the drivers and reboot. Like Praetor said it could definately be the PSU.
