Hi, i'm in the process of choosing a new monitor. i was thinking about getting a 17" tft but having seen the price of 21" crts i think i might have to sacrifice size for quality! i really like the look of the Samsung SM1100DF with its amazing 0.20 dot pitch but tbh i just cant believe its only going to cost me 300 quid including postage! is there something i should know because this seems too good to be true...

heres the link to the monitor :

(i have found it cheaper)

thanks for any help!

we have samsung tft's at work and they are quite good quality picture, havent had them long enough to comment on reliability.
For crt monitors, LG is my favourite brand.

LCDs are not better than CRT'S, in fact its quiet the opposite they are twice the price and yet in an all around comparison they just don't match up. If you're looking to save space and word process then a LCD might be your best bet but if you're into gaming, DVD video, photography or anthing that requires an accurate color balance then CRT is the way to go. Folow the link for a comparison between them.

Samsung make damn fine monitors (of course their ultra budget end is, as expected, crummy). Their high end monitors will blow away damn near every other monitor you put it up against :)

i'd rather have a 15" LCD screen that a 20"CRT screen anyday. right now i have a flat screen 17" mag monitor and its the best i have ever used. LCD's just are alot smaller and easier to carry...im always borrowing a monitor when i go to LAN parties cuz mine is too big to tote lol. but still its very sharp, very clear picture, and for under $200 the best deal i have ever had.

I would recommend an LCD purely for deskspace and ease on the eyes. Samsung makes some great one with a 700:1 color ratio which is amazing at worst. Sorry about not remembering the model. 700:1 with a small dot pitch should get what you are looking for as far as image quality goes. They are so much easier on the eyes than crts as well. They are more expensive but with that kinda monitor you get what you pay for. If you are gamer you may want to go with a CRT, but keep in mind there are plenty of good 17 and 19" LCD panels with fast response times. The new BenQ looks ubersweet. I like mine as well but I would go with BenQ if I had to do it over.
If i went with a crt i would get a viewsonic graphic or pro series. I'm partial to graphic.
Let us know what you decide to do. :)

I guess that's subjective :)

Yes indeed however not very many LCDs will breach the 0.25 barrier for dot pitch and to my knowledge no consumer one's do.

Well yeah man, I'm just saying lcd are coming closer and closer to that mark. It'll be while before you see a LCD with that kinda pitch. I'm just saying that they are getting really close and most would not notice to much or any difference. *slaps Praetor* :p

And yes, it is subjective. But i've stared at enough of both screens to get a good opinion. and it's this:

Good CRT vs. Good LCD=Color reproduction is better with the CRT. The LCD is a space saver and seems to be easier to stare at if text is invovled.

Crap CRT=Midrange LCD=go with the crt.

My point is this: If you aren't going to get a high end LCD, it isn't worth the trouble and a CRT is a much better option. You can get a VERY top of the line CRT for nearly half the cost of the LCD. The only reason I have an LCD is because of dorm room space. I just made sure i got one worth a flip. I really do like it in comparision with my 8 year old Sony Trinitron. But yeah, those new CRTs are super sweet for gaming and editing.

that was suppose to be Crap CRT vs. Midrange LCD=go with the CRT.

and "crap" is for what i would call low budget at around 100 bucks. Some of those monitors rock though. :)
