how to speed up computer?

My moms computer has been getting loaded with spyware virus and all kinds of junk. it has tons of programs and crap on there. its a fairly fast computer but lately it has been getting slower and slower. it has some adware that i cant seem to get rid off also. it has 512mb of ram ? is that an adequite amount of ram fo rthis computer or would upgrading it be helpful?
does anyone know of any good freeware that will remove some of this syware and adware and maybe celan up the registrY?

Ad-aware and spybot are both good free programs. Try those first. If they don't work, you can use the more powerful tools like hijackthis. Hijackthis has it's own forum where you can do the scan, post your results, and people will help to isolate the problem.

Oh, regarding the ram, 512 is fine if the computer is used for standard word processing, internet, solitaire, etc.
