best place to register a domain name

ok, so lets say that I already have a place to host my domain, but I don't have the domain registered to me

Where would the best place to register the domain be?

P.S. A domain can be registered anywhere and then transferred to your web host right?

Your host doesn't host the domain, it only hosts your webserver package (the ftp, the webserver software etc). A registrar online is who hosts your domain, all you simply do is link it up to your web hosting package so that whenever someone enters your domain it'll point at your website hosted with your web host. Where are you located globally? As there are various cheap hosts depending on where you are. Meaning, I know of a fairly decent registrar for domains based in the UK. Although I highly doubt that bandwidth issues will be a problem with a domain where ever it's located, but it's always nice to have your domain hosted within the same country :).

Any host anywhere in the world should be fine, godaddy is quite good, and there are plenty of discount vouchers if you google them.

Where abouts you purchase your domain from doesn't really make any difference, since the DNS servers are located all around the world, and then the information about your domain is mirrored across them, although it doesn't happen instantly, and this is why it takes a day or so for your domain to be fully operative

I did say that performance wise having a domain located in another country wasn't a problem at all. It's just you can usually always find one cheaper locally. Plus, it's nicer for support when they're local (I have found).
