Monitors - Am i lame for not going widescreen?

All my life i've been playing games on CRT screens, and now the option for a new monitor upgrade has came upon me, But with me only going to be using a 8800GTS 320 MB version, the resolutions might yield better FPS results on a bit smaller resolution (Such as 1280x1024), though all i've ever used monitor wise has been a 17 inch CRT. I was going to make the jump up to a 22 inch widescreen, although i'm trying to save a few extra bucks and was looking at some of these acer monitors, and for $170 i can get a 19 inch LCD monitor. I'm going to be using this monitor strictly for games, so what do you think i should do? I never saw any real reason to go widescreen, and a few extra inches on my screen is nice. i'm stuck, but i really wanna save money too ;D

The wideness is what gives it the advantage for games. Better periphrial view in FPS's.

Widescreen is definatly the way to go.

I chose a 20" standard because in the end I'm paying a little more for the extra room a 19" widescreen offers without sacrificing the vertical size.

Widescreen looks alot better to me for some reason =3.
I can vouch for the lcd in my sig...It has amazing contrast, brightness, and clarity. Also, I only paid $170 for it with free shipping from compusa =D

Could someone measure their screen (From top to bottom) on their 20 inch widescreen? I'm curious as to if it's alot smaller than my current from top to bottom.

Read around last year that the best LCD back then could only compare to an below middle range CRT :D

It's smaller

I love my 22" monitor. So much space. I can throw two essentially full windows up and be able to see everything. Really awesome for working on college papers and such.

And the games are sooooo much more immersive.

I fell outa my chair the other day playing fear on my 22 with my stereo system cranked. Crap did that freak the hell outa me. 22 is awesome if you are one of those types of people who gets immersed in the game and not just a button clicker.

Soooo nice, thats about all i can say.

Ohh and i went from a 15" lcd to the 22". HUGE difference =)

Looks nice. How are these budget displays? (Acer and Haans-G) Are they any good? They seem to get pretty decent reviews, but idk if it's worth it to save up a bit more and go samsung or something.

for whoever asked for height measurements...
my 17" non-wide screen is 10.75 inches tall
my 22" wide screen is 11.75" inches tall

so for a 20" wide vs 19" non-wide, id say the height difference would be somewhere less than an inch
