Best Headphones

I have been using the same old pair of Sony Headphones for like 3 years. They are starting to fall apart. What is the best affordable pair of headphones?

I use Bose Triport headphones. Not exactly the cheapest, but being a quasi-audiophile (I have scores of headphones, Sony, Sennheiser, Koss, etc. etc.), I have found that these sound the best to me. They are really subtle. I hear things I never heard in music before. Stuff I probably should have been hearing, but wasn't.

So, my argument is that you essentially get what you pay for. I stopped buying mediocre headphones after I stepped on my 70 dollar Sony headphones.

If you aren't really an audiophile, I'd recommend these (because they kick ass for PC gaming, and general online PC usage). The sound quality is not bad, either. Above average, in my opinion.

i'm not a fan of Sennhauser's open-air headphones

i'll agree that they sound very natural.

but they need lots of power, and can bother people around you, which are 2 of the major benefits of using headphones in the 1st place.

The bose are really the opposite end of the spectrum, to a fault.

They're extremely sensitive, which is good for portable mp3 players, etc. And exaggerate bass, which is a good thing at low volumes.

But with headphone drivers, the only way to get good full-range flat sound is with a decent amount of volume, and under any type of decent power (anything non-portable, really) they tend to get muddy, or even distort.

I like the $20 sony headphones for cheap, around the house headphones.

For GOOD sound, i honestly recommend a high-end pair of Shure in-ear headphones.

Don't shrug them off because you don't like the $10 ear-buds that came with your ipod. These are COMPLETELY different.

They fit into your ears TIGHT, like actual earplugs. You can even get custom fitted earpieces like a hearing aid. And they COMPLETELY block out ambient noise. The high end ones even come with a microphone on the cable, so you can press a button to hear someone talking to you, instead of having to take them on and off all the time, because they block THAT much sound.

The better ones even use multiple drivers. They have dedicated Subwoofer, Woofer, Tweeter. It's like wearing a high-end speaker setup in your ear. They're honestly unreal. The best ones i've ever heard were just the $250 SE-320's, and they were hands down the most overwhelming headphones i've ever heard.

If i had the money, i'd buy a pair in a heartbeat.

The highest ones are called the 520's, and cost $550, but can be had online for as low as $350.

Look for a review on them, tho. They outperform $1000+ traditional headphones, by being able to create and utilize a tight seal between the drivers and your ear, and actually using your ear canal as a speaker enclosure. The things have a flat response curve down to an ungodly 18hz!!!! 18hz!!!! For anyone who knows anything about speakers, that's ungodly low. The subs you hear booming down your block are typically in the 40-60hz range. 18hz is like organ music.

i have had great success with sony earbuds. i wound spend $50 on a pair of the silicone in-ear type. very comfortable, and they block out alot of noise simply from blocking off the ear canal. i have a $100 set of noise canceling in-earbuds, and i love them (even though they look gross cause they were white til i started using them for mowing, and now they are a dirty off white-yellow)
