Wireless question. (wireless router vs access point)

Ok so,

There is a network switch here at work, a few ports still open. I want to put a computer kind of far from it, so obliviously wireless is the way to go.

I plugged a wireless router into one of the empty ports, and the computer receives the router signal, but there is no connection to the internet/network. There are no hardwired computers to the router, just the 1 uplink cable to the switch. The router is a linksys.

I don't know if I just have to do some settings to the router, or if I need to buy an access point instead. Somebody have some insight to share :)

Thanks

The router should still work, but you would need to change some settings.

First off though, does your work have a DHCP server, or are all the IP's manually assigned? Secondly, is there any kind of security such as MAC filtering which could be blocking any kind of foreign device on the network?

the normal thing to do is to buy an access point for that kind of thing...but if you do what OMEGA said then it should work

Was out of town for a few days, Thanks for the replies guys :)

I will try to turning off MAC filtering on the router (linksys). We can manually assign IP's, but the only computer we have that done on is the security computer so we can view the video feed while away from office. : /

I'm far from network savvy. Thanks again
