I know its an age old dibate but realy what do you think, i have always used Norton internet security but found it slowing down my old system (it even distroyed the os and forced me to scrap it after trying to uninstall it), now i have just upgraded to a vista system which came with a month free subscription with Macfee SecurityCenter, i haven't found any problems, as of yet, but is it worth paying to keep it, does it give the same or better protection as internet security?
I have until the end of the month to decide so im in no hurry.

McAfee also slows down your computer but since your history with Norton i dont think you would want to Use any type of Norton Anti-Virus. I would Advise you to use Kaspersky Antivirus its a really antivirus program. JUST ADVISE i'm not gonna try to force you to use it.

For an excellent retail alternative Trend Micro has some good programs to look at. For a free program AVG by Grisoft also has antispyware program to go with it. These are high rated programs in each catagory. AVG has an excellent email scanner as well.

Spyware Terminator is a rather recent freeware for adware as well as spyware protection which includes a mild form of firewall and automatically updates itself. It catches things that Ad-Aware will miss and vice varsa.

Sometimes you'll run into a new bug that will slip rght past the best programs out. Then you have to look for a special remover made specifically for it. Grisoft does provide several of those types of removers for the I-Worm and other types you can look over at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/34/us/crp/0

The free version for home use always works well here. In fact with it totally disabled with the msconfig in both the startup and services tabs it sprung to life one day when a trojan was copied instantly to the drive upon running into a bad site during a search. It pointed the exact location and file name for manual removal. bye bye trojan downloader!

Grisoft also offers IE protection and malware removers as well. Those can be looked over at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/31/us/crp/0 The free for home use antivirus and antispyware downloads are seen at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

....Whats with you people. XD still using windows when you can stop buying Anti-Virus products and not be worried about viruses ever again. Get Linux Non-Virus Operating System if you are scared to switch to linux ... I was too Until i knew what it was all about..
Stop recommending Software without guarantees , stick with something good >Linux<.

Fact there are only 2 Viruses for linux both of them arnt really serious.

And Linux is still based on the long outdated UNIX platform. I may as well pull out an old IBM 386 and run dos and 3.1 while some improvements have been seen in the latest releases. It's taken as longer to see device drivers for Linux over the limited amount now seen for the 64bit versions of Windows.

For a Windows system like running XP and Vista in mind there AVG does a great job pointing out just where virus files and contaminated files are located. In fact I've intentionally let I-Worm type viruses roam to see what files they infected. Once AVG pointed them out I simply deleted any extras and overwrote any system files by expanding a fresh copy from the installation disk.

Those are times when AVG wasn't able to quaranteen them. But that's still far better then using a resource pounder like Norton or about 0% protection offered by McAFee. I ran McAFee a number of years back and still hear complaints about the newer versions for XP since then. I wouldn't expect much improvement for Vista either.

I had Norton and removed it, and what a task that was, it seems norton attaches itself to everything it can.

For the last few years I've heard nothing but complaints about Norton while many will use their Ghost still for drives. I keep great results with AVG on and the same with other systems where someone took the advice for the free versions Grisoft offers. AVG is also far less intrusive for an antivirus programs then others especially Norton.

AVG has proven itself time and again even when totally being disabled it would suddenly come to life when some strange new site run into during a web search instantly copied a trojan downloader onto the drive. Alarm bells sounded as AVG instantly came up with a prompt pointing right at the exact file and location.

While AVG and some others work well one thing to remember is that there is none seen that will catch everything. With some bugs and I-Worm type viruses you often need a special remover to them removed. Grisoft fortunately has several available for immediate download from the list seen at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/29223/us/frt/0

They even offer a few other things like rootkits and internet protection, and even AVG Pro for Linux. That would retail for that however.

I lost two hard drives to viruses when using Norton. I loathe the program!

I use AVG as well and it is very good. People forget that when your antivirus isn't catching anything it's because the program is well supported and updated.

I'd rather have Norton

Good luck! Or should I say Good Grief! I ran the Symantec System Works on an old 98 machine after being disatisfied with McAFee and dumped that fast as well. Then AVG came along back then and worked out well ever since! You can't go wrong with a winning program. :D
