Vista sucks. I want to install XP on my new laptop in its place. Can I?

Yesterday I bought a new laptop (HP AMD Athlon 64 X2) with Windows Vista on it. It did not come with a Vista disk though. In fact it did not come with any disk whatsoever. How would I be able to reinstall Windows Vista if something goes wrong if I don't have the disk.

Needless to say, I detest Vista. It's slow as hell compared to my old comp (which is 2 and a half years old).

My old comp used XP, and I reinstalled XP on it, using the operating system disk that came with it, about three times on that comp.

I am wondering whether I can install XP onto this new comp to replace Vista, even though the disk came for the OLD comp and the product key is on the OLD comp.

The last thing I want to happen is for me to clear my computer of Vista and install XP, only to find out at the end of the installation that Microsoft will not let me complete my installation. I would then be left without XP, and without Vista (because I don't have the Vista disk).

Anyone?

you cant use xp twice, unless you pirated a serial key or something. i tend to think your laptop is slow because of the shit they load consumer computers with, though...vista boots fine for me...takes about 3 seconds to load after login. and my computers pretty antiquated at this point...

Yup. You should be able to create a recovery disk. Go to your computers support page at the HP website. In the search box at the home page, type in the model number. You should be able to find instructions on how to create the disk. If your old PC is an OEM (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.) then, as Brian said, you will not be able to use that disk.

Even if you did get a legal second copy of Windows XP to replace the current Windows Vista installation you have, it most likely wouldn't work. Since it's a recent laptop all the drivers required are designed for Windows Vista only and only a few Generic Windows XP drivers would work. It's my best guess that imporant things such as sound or your Video Card (resulting in horrid resolutions and low color bits) wouldn't work or be fully supported.

And that's to say if you can even get XP loaded onto your system. I'm judging that since it's a recent laptop that it's using a SATA hard drive. In order to use SATA hard drives in Windows XP you must include the driver for it which can only be installed from a floppy disk during the Windows XP installation. I'm doubting your new laptop has a floppy drive.

That's just my two cents. Hope I helped.

Not to mention mobo drivers. Good point. Many have had problems "downgrading" to XP. It kinda sucks. M$ rules the world.

Or unless you already uninstalled XP from that system

If you have the orginal xp installation and you bought it. (not a dell) or like and you bought the xp. call microsoft and tell them. tell them your old computer took a dump and you have another computer. the old computer will be shut down but will be allowed to use on the newer. i know, ive done it. its an exchange from one to the other. Of course a corp will work. Or maybe install lynix open suse.

I personally have no problem with Vista on my laptop. It takes around 3-4 seconds to load everything up after I restart. I am surprised that you didn't get a disk for Vista from the laptop manufacturer. Try uninstalling the bloat ware that came with your laptop, and disabling start up programs to make your boot times faster.
