Magnetized screws

I was screwing in my motherboard to the spacers on the case. One of them wouldn't tighten, and after awhile it started clinging magnetically to the screwdriver. I know magnets are dangerous to electronics. Could this harm the motherboard?

It's unlikely that the magnetic field would be strong enough to do any damage but if you have a spare non magnetised screw then you may as well swap it to be sure.

magnetism is sure danegerous to hard drives and floppies, but the very small amout that the screw would have aquired is unlikely to do any damege, but to be sure as simon says .. swap screwdrivers

although it is possible for your screws to become magnetized, it is much more likely your screwdriver is magnetized, not the screws. to check, put two screws next to each other and see if they grab each other.

I think a magnet is dangerous only when it becomes electromagnetic, that's when you would start to lose your data :D

I'm sure someone will correct me, but I've been inside of hard drives and can tell you that there is a magnet under the actuator cover plate.

Sorry to be off topic from the OP.

Okay, I guess it's really not an issue. For some reason I thought magnets were the bane of all electronics, but I guess they're only bad for disk drives.

BTW, how is it going into a hard drive? is it ever safe?

well magnetic felds are not too dangerous. right now we are being pownded with them. As i recall the only thing able to distroy a floppy let alone a hd is a neodymium magnet are 1T. to put that into perspetive, a normal magnet is .1T, the earths magnetic pull is .00005T

It takes a VERY VERY strong magnet to erase data frpm a hard drive.

You're fine. I use magnets on my screwdriver... Makes it really easy to "pickup" an small screw... :D Without frying your mobo

Hmm, i think I destroyed data on a floppy by farting on it. One time I glared at one and it would never format again...

sorry, had to correct that spelling ;)

I doubt a screw could do anything.

Manual for my Z-5500's warned me not to put the sub within 60cm of my computer haha.

Bit bigger magnet though.
