Weird XP problem.

So I got a new laptop with XP.

It has 2 harddrives. I downloaded some files onto my desktop, and then transfered them to the second hard drive into label folders. Now I can no longer play the files. It says access denied.

It won't let me move the files back, delete the folder, etc.

What am I missing here, what do I need to change to fix this and not have to redownload everything.

Thank for the help

cuold be a DRM or codec issue.

what type of files are they?
where and how did you get these files.
how are you trying to play them?

could be a permission issue.

make a text file on the second harddrive and try to re edit it, open, and move it.

try copying stuff over to it the drive.

They are AVI files.

They are from a torrent, my download file is on the D drive. I copied them out of there onto the desktop(c:), and watched. After a while I move them back onto the d: in a seperate folder I have for movies. Now they won't work.

I made a txt file in D: opened it, typed some, saved, edited.

Moved to folder 'movies' and I am no longer able to edit it.

what exact error message are you getting when you try opening files on D?
does this happen when you try to access any file on the drive, not just the moives folder?

What's the history on the copmuter. you say its new, but is it new as in not used from a store with fresh install of windows? A different user could have setup the drive so that other users cant access it. I'm not sure about this and how windows handles file acess permision localy on a drive. I suggest looking to file permissions.

Only in the movies folder.

When I try to open the file, I get an error from Windows media player
"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. the file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

If I try to move the file from the movies folder back to my desktop I get a windows error
"Cannot copy XXXXXXX : Access is denied.
Make sue the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"

use the windows install cd to go into recovery console and delete the folder. Then make a new fold while still in recovery console.

make folders on D and do the above with the files again. This is to see if the movies folder is the only issue and this problem wont happen again with other folders and files.

Well, I just had to change some folder options, uncheck simple file sharing, then make myself have full access in the security tab.

I don't know why I wouldn't have full access in the first place as I am the only person to ever use this computer, and I bought it new, made the folder/etc. Freak'n weird.

Thanks for the help :D

Well I did see that as how to fix it but It doesnt makes sense to me b.c the file sharing is for network not being on the computer. Maybe it does mean being on the computer...
