AVI files do not play.

I can not get AVI files to play on any software I have tried. This started happening about a week ago. Prior to that they played fine.

WMV, Mpeg and all other file types still play fine.

I have not loaded any software that could have caused this problem. I have downloaded and installed the latest versions of winamp and windows media player to see if that would fix the problem. Neither had any effect.

That VLC player worked. Thanks!

well vlc player doesnt require codecs to be downloaded.
so your codecs for WMP or whatever must have been lost somehow.

are you fine using VLC? or would you rather be using WMP?

i recommend vlc anyway.

VLC > then all media players. Takes less memory to run, supports all formats with out codecs, free and open source, runs on windows, OS X and Linux, can stream audio/video over a network, and just is all around better than any other media player. Especially the bloated WMP.

I have been using VLC exclusively for a few years now on my windows box and have never looked back.

vlc is slow it lags while playing resolutions higher than 1056, just get cccp which is pretty much a k-lite pack + media player classic

I don't ever have this problem with VLC. I once played a video file over the network onto a HD Projector at work with no lag.

Not to hijack the thread, however I have been having a recurring problem. Some video files (usually .avi), and the occasional mp3 files will start to play fine but at some point all sound and video will stop/freeze and then 30-60 seconds later it starts playing again by zooming up to wherever the video would be had it continued playing normally.

I am going to assume it may just be a codec problem, and I have both WMP and VLC on my system and it has done it in both. I don't particularly have a preference to which player I use...but I would love nothing more than to nip this annoying problem in the butt.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Try cccp, cuz it sounds that the files you are playing might be broken for regular players specially vlc cuz it's kinda of an open source
