How do you manage all the hundreds of digital images you have taken? Do you just keep them in files or do you use Image managment software and why? What categories do you have etc??

Do you back up your images, and how do you go about doing it?

I place them into folders that I name after the main theme of the pictures inside.

I put them in folders by activity and time of year/year (ex: Summer 2007).
I then throw them up on flickr. I have like 8,000 pictures from fun things I have done for ~8 years.. It is only $20 a year for a flickr unlimited account. Works great!

My setup is basically the same as webbenji's.
However I'm starting to out grow that system, so I'll have to find another way.

I have all my photos on my external hdd. I'm going to be getting another external hdd soon. So then all my pictures will be backed up on that one also.

I keep them on my second HD and arranged into folders relevent to the theme. I then use Googles Picasa so I can add keywords to each photo thereby grouping them again into "families". This makes it easy to recall all similar photo themes.

If you use picasa, do you have to always use this program to import and veiw your images? When you inport pictures and then export them, does it save it in any soft of file structure? When you expor timages does it save image names and tasg so the image so if you import the images into picasa on a normal system the rating, tags etc.. are saved?

Basically, you can import them anywhere you want, using any program(including picasa), but next time you open picasa it will locate the pictures you've downloaded or imported and show what ever is in one folder to the next.

Just downloaded picasa, it looks quite good. I like the way it just monitors folders and i can still just use my conventional file structure for photo's but use picasa to veiw them all and crop pictures etc..
