Asus M2v-mx Se

This board does not seem to like sound cards. I bought two of these boards at the same time and built two systems at the same time as Christmas gifts. Running Windows XP Pro SP2. I get squeals, pops, and static mixed in with the sound in varying degrees. I've tried three different sound cards, that I confirmed are good in one of my other systems. I get the same lame results in both of these M2V-MX SE M.B.s. Its not the cards. The cards are Creative Labs.. X-Fi Gamer, Audigy2, and a Soundblaster live card. I tried disabling the onboard sound in the Bios, used current drivers for each of the cards, etc. Tried different slots. I don't see any obvious shorts circuits or anything, like the board is touching something. Everything else on the board works fine. Is this a known issue with these boards that I am not aware of? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Should I just RMA the boards?

RMAing for a different model may not solve a problem if Vista drivers are the cause there. When putting the new build together I saw both video and sound driver problems until ATI.AMD replaced the Catalyst 7.9 control center with the 7.10 version.

For sound Creative's own installer first on the Xtreme Audio then Xtreme Gamer model was actually downloading the Vista update onto XP! The MS update site did the exact same thing. When going to the Creative support site their July 2007 update when selecting XP as the OS turned out to be the auto web updater3 for Vista! The Dec.2006 was updater 1 for XP with not updater 2 ever found.

I thought I would pass along that little bit of info about the goofs with the auto updater seen there to see you fell into the same thing with the 3 model cards there. Generally Asus boards readily take any Creative model without problems. But you still have the option to rma those for a different model or make and model if looking at the driver problem isn't what is being seen there.

Thank you for the reply. Howerver I used the actual discs that came with the cards for the install of each card. Then got an updated driver off the download site after the initial install would give me nothing but static and abnormal results. An interesting note: On the Audigy 2 card everything seemed to work normally and I thought I might be on to something. That was as long as I stayed witin the XP operating environment. But when I tried to run EA games Battlefield 2 it was a big No Go. Static and strange noises so back to square one. I am very disappointed that I'm having this problem with an ASUS board. I may just have to see about the RMA.

Have you tried the onboard sound to see if the same thing happens. Plus try your speakers on another system to rule out the speakers.

Yes, The onboard RealTek sound works fine. The speakers are fine because I get the same problem if I plug in a set of head phones instead. Still looking for a solution. I might try taking the M.B. out of the case and running it on top of a piece flat styrofoam.

Since you said you tried it in different slots I would say that rules out a IRQ problem. When you take the board out look and make sure you didnt have a riser where one didnt belong.

When first installing sound on the new build first with the Audio then Gamer models the software disks were used and saw the auto updater go to work then downloading the Vista driver set as well as at the MS update and on Creative's own support site directly. I mentioned this to see if that was what you ran into there.

No problems were seen with sound on Vista however since both versions are being run here presently. The problems there was when leaving the Audigy 4 Pro in the last build and going with first the Audio then Gamer models assuming the first card was seeing some problem like what you mentioned there. One thing I found lately that can clean up a lot of crap like buzzing or humming sounds if you also have a tv tuner or video/sound capture card is the Smart Volume Management feature or SM.

Turn that off by unchecking the box and the cranked up amplifier annoyance disappears instantly. The X-Fi model cards tend to amplify the signal from other devices that also see their own audio processing/amplification type chips on them.

Well with that said, I guess I could start with a clean XP Pro install, Install the sound card and not allow the sound card installation to do any updates. Maybe it is a imbedded driver issue.

The problem seen when seeing the auto update popup appear is what was found at Creative's support site as far as Vista drivers when selecting XP as the version of Windows. Following the 12/2006 update for XP seeing a Vista update there was a goofup by whoever manages their site!

With the new build here with an Asus M2N-E model the first board had to replaced when that simply quit after the first 3 days of use. I saw the same sound driver problem when setting things up again and reinstalling XP all over for the replacement. Despite a bad cap or bios eprom or another component then the problem saw a repeat all over again on a totally different board.
