Hi,

Lately my internet has been running very slowly. It usually takes anwhere between 5-20 seconds for a page to load each time I click on a page. From time to time the page will sit and after waiting 20-30 seconds I will eventually hit refresh and it will load in about 3-5 seconds. Sometimes it give me the "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Webpage" error and then I hit refresh and it shows the page. And usually after the computer has been on for a couple of days, or after heavy surfing for about 30-45 min I will get "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Webpage" for everything, even google, and I will have to restart the computer, then it works again, but always slow as I have described above. Does anyone know what would cause these symptoms? I have cox and I ran a speedtest, (but not using cox's site, it wanted a password)...

Your Connection Loaded 322,649 bytes in 0.844 seconds.
Your throughput is 3058 Kbps.

I have a 2 year old dell pentium D
Windows XP 5.1 SP2
Internet Explorer 7
I have a version of McAfee, don't know which

Thanks for any help.

(even trying to load this post took about 8 seconds)

Hello!
I think this is actually posted in the wrong forum. I am sure that moderators may move this to Security since I suspect on viruses. Until they move it ( if they do ) I will have to ask you to post your HijackThis log.
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

What is hijack this, what does it do? I am not really comfortable downloading something I do not know about

Your internet is running really slow? That's called "My internet is walking!"
:p:p

On topic: Internet Explorer 7 is kinda heavy for some systems, try switching to IE6 and see what happens. Who is your internet provider?

Sorry ramodkk I'm afraid I have to disagree. Internet Explorer problems are different and yes, quite annoying sometimes. But this is great example of spyware and trojan working 2 against the machine.
Now caliskier, if you came on this forum for help, you should do what you've been told. Surf around this forum, you will see tones of HijackThis logs, google HijackThis and see what you get.
Or just cut the time waste to all and post a log.

Comon GameMaster, be nice and explain ;)

Hijackthis is a program that gives you a log of what's on your computer. It's the opposite of what an Anti-Virus do, instead of searching for files, it gives you what's on your computer.
It is a Trend Micro free product. Once you've posted the log, GameMaster will tell you if there is any malicious files on your computer that's causing your slow internet.
Hijackthis does not do any harm if you follow GameMaster's instructions.

Personaly I would just reformat the HD and reinstall windows...that way if it is your computer causing it the problem will be fixed. If you srill have the problem then you know its an issue with your isp.

yeah, waste a day of backing up files or just lose all your files...

If it's a spyware/virus/trojans that's causing the problem, it will be fixed soon, if the problem is coming from the ISP, we'll know it too from this log (if it is clean it's not the computer...)

Waste a day backing up your files? I can reformat, reload all my files and programs in 2hrs and start from fresh...you should do that with windows at least once a year anyway. Even running ccleaner and regcleaners widows still leave things on your computer that they miss. Files and the regestry become corrupted and slow your computer way down.

Just because a hijackthis log is clean does not mean the computer is not at fault with this problem, there could be a underlying issue going on.

Soon the internet will be full of spam and the whole Internet will be running slow for everyone, and the IP numbers are comming to an end. Then we're all screwed!

Does this happen at any particular time of the day? Cause I've had issues with my ISP about web speeds varying at certain times of the day. Heck your connection may be fine, it could be whoever you pay for internet!

Hello!
I am GameMaster as you remember. Please, forgive me on my unpleasent answer when you searched for help.
Ok, let's start. Please run HijackThis again and choose Do a system scan only. Place a check nex to these entries:

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnxserv.exe
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/dellsidebar.jsp?p=DE
  • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
  • O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
  • O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
  • O16 - DPF: {001EE746-A1F9-460E-80AD-269E088D6A01} (Infotl Control) - http://site.ebrary.com.libproxy.umr..../ebraryRdr.cab
  • O16 - DPF: {341FF14B-00CB-49F5-A427-A164DF1D5E1F} (MALPlaybackCtrl Class) - http://musicstore.connect.com/XSL/mb...LStreaming.cab
  • O23 - Service: Vsclient Service (VnxService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnxserv.exe

Now when you did it, please select Fix.
That will not get rid of viruses, so that's why we need to use ComboFix.
Download and Run ComboFix
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

So in the next log I want ComboFix log and HijackThis log ( new ).
Good luck!
