I want to be able to access files and folders on my desktop computer and so I want to set up FTP access on it.

Has Vista got built in FTP server software or do I have do download my own to run on it?

If this is the case, what free software do you recommend?

You are wanting to access file from another computer on your network or from the internet?

What version of Vista are you running?

If you want to access these files from the internet you will need to port forward to your Vista machine. However, this will be a possible way into you computer for hackers.

IMO, I would never give access to my PC to the web. I would run FTP on a machine set up in a DMZ.

Vista like most windows OS's will have shared documents, anything placed there will be able to be seen, opened, manipulated by other users on your network with a little tinkering. Like axgrinder73 i wouldn't suggest putting any part of you machine open on the net. There are hundreds of websites offering web hosting out there, it's quite cheap these days.
