well, I was thinking about selling my current cards, and getting one (to start with) of these. so, 2 7800GTX to a single 3870. I was wondering tough, would the performance difference be worth it?
I mean, is the 3870 a lot better than what i currently have? I'm running windows xp x64 atm (because i have a legal version of that) and I dont want to spend 130 euro's on vista jsut yet, so the DX10 doesnt bother me.

either way, I can sell 1 of my cards for 80 euros (right now) and I'm sure the 2nd one will get me the same ammount of money (or i'll keep it as backup)
the 3870 costs 210 euros (so, 50 euro's more than my 7800's together)

all I basicly need is a yes, or no, in terms of is the performance that much better to validate the effort and costs of it? :) (benchmark comparisons would be nice ^^ )

HD3870 would perform better than two 7800GTX but not by a lot

Since you have SLI mobo, I suggest 8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB if your budget permits, and you can buy another one sometime later

I'm going to buy a new motherboard soon-ish anyway, since this one doesnt allow me to OC a q6600. however, that a 3870 wouldnt perform THAT much better as my current setup says enough gor me I suppose, I think i'll just wait 1 more generation of grafic's cards then ^^

the reson i want to go with Ati is plain and simple the much lower power useage of the card. Ati is going the right way with that imo. Nvidia made a step into the right direction with the 8800GT/GTS (G92) but they are still quite power hog's, and imo, a pc really shouldnt use more than 600Watt's

Ok, change of plans, I can get 90 euro's for 1 7800gtx now, and I can get a MSI 8800 GT 512Mb for the same price as I could get the 3870, would that be worth it?

Or if you get a X38 motherboard, and get one 3870 now and another later. Crossfire 3870's beat GT's in SLI.. i'll never buy another nvidia chipset unless they improve :p

Actually, 8800GT in SLI beats HD3870 in crossfire

Here is the proof for that
http://techreport.com/articles.x/13967/7

This review is more recent than the review from experience.com

Your joking right? somehow i knew you were going to say this.. looks at those benchmarks you posted, a moron can tell you those are BS (for example, the COD4 benchmarks, at 1680x1050 Crossfire gets LOWER FPS then i get with a single card!?! get real.)

Crossfire has always scaled better than SLI, this has been known for a long time.

Heres a much more realistic review here http://en.expreview.com/?p=53&page=4

ok, they mage the 3870 a bit cheaper now.. the 3870 is 25 euro's cheaper as the 8800gt. this is getting annoying, so now I'm back to the old question, 3870 vs. 8800GT >.<

I would get the 3870 if you think you might go with a dual card settup later, in my opinion either one would be great for a single card solution. If you wanted dual cards, the X38 motherboards are ~$200 and that might be out of the question for you anyway?

ive seen that the 3870 crossfire setups perform less than a 8800GT setup when it comes to AA and AF enabled (something I would have enabled for sure I think)

How loud is the cooler on a 3870 btw? (and yes, I'm basicly thinking about going for a multicard setup again :) however, that could take a while tough. I'm basicly looking for a good motherboard to OC my cpu tough)

3870's are more quiet then my X800 which is hardly audible over the rest of my components, (stock AMD fan is the clencher) so i think you would be ok in terms of audible noise.

Ok, i've made up my mind (again :p ) I'm gonna give Ati a chanse on proving itself ^_^ I've had NVidia cards for ages now (mx440 -> fx5200 -> 6800gt -> 2 7800gtx's)
hopefully I'm not making a wrong call here  tomorrow i should know :p

If it makes any difference to you, don't download the CCC too. All they've give me is problems problems problems

If something happens, don't blame it on me :p. I love this card, oh with CCC, just leave everything to default. ;)

is good to know the current ati drivers allow crossfire to run 2 monitors. previous impossible. now thats +1 for ati. nvidia should do the same. i like multiview.
