3+ monitors

When i get my new computer I will have three monitors, and i want to hook them all up to the same machine. Most desktops only have two connections for monitors, so how do i ad the third?

I have heard that i need another graphics card, does it need to be exactly the same type? If the GFX card in my new system is PCI-E, does the new graphics card also have to be PCIE and the same make/model or does it not matter?

On older systems, you used to be able to add a secondary graphics card in any PCI slot. This gave more ports and provided you had the right drivers, it worked fine.
However, this would be catastrophic for gaming performance, and thus the only viable option is to install 2 relatively powerful cards in SLi.
Make sure each one has 2 DVI ports.

You cant dual monitor if your running SLI. You need to buy a special connector box to do this, hold on and ill find it for you

No, Running SLI will only let you run one monitor off one card. If Im wrong, please provide a link suggesting otherwise.

What is SLI?

Wouldn't using that KVM splitter only duplicate the image on multiple screens and not allow me to span my desktop across all three?

I would be wanting to use all three monitors on the same system at the same time spanning my desktop across all three, Not just duplicating it.

SLI is the use of 2 or more graphics cards simultaneously, to get better performance in games.
I don't know about those splitters but I would recommend you choose to use an additional graphics card to support your extra monitors. This will allow you to 'spread' your desktop across them, and give you a much larger workspace.

Agreed, use an extra card for best results. The splitter would be a sort of quick cheap fix but dont expect to do any gaming with it.

Called Scalable Link Interface.

Not worth it IMO.

SLi = nVidia

CrossFire = ATi
