An Intel Choice

Building myself a powerfull system that I want to last. I will be running 3 monitors off it, doing some demanding work on it but I don't think I will be playing that many games. Overclocking does not interest me. Its been a while since I have been in the market for new computer parts.

I want to spend around £150 and here are my choices:

Option 1: intel core 2 quad Q6600 2.4ghz

Option 2: Core 2 duo E6850 3ghz or core 2 duo E8400 3Ghz (I cant really tell the difference and which one it best.

Which of these options is the best, most powerful and recommended?

Thanks

i would get the E8400.
i know the Q6600 is better for multitasking which is probably what u are doing, yea?
but get the E8400 just for the extra MHz.
just give us a rough idea what type of demanding work you are going to do on it!
an i might change my mind

Im a computer systems security student so I will be doing things like penetration testing, disk imaging and analysis etc..

I will also be doing basic image editing, webside dev, programming + all the usual things like itunes, web browsing etc..

It doesn't really matter if the L2 Cache ain't enough compared to the Quad.

I'll go with the quad. Perhaps even the QX6700.

get the E8400. runs cooler then the rest and is really really fast. excellent overclocker.

The QX6700 is old, theres no reason to spend that much on it. I would go with the E8400, as it's brand new, has a 45nm process so runs cooler and overclocks further, and is overall a better performer.

Bit confused now, everyone is saying different things. Which is the fastest, most powerful CPU option?

the e8400.

on tomshardware.com the q6600 wins with stuff like rendering and 3dmark. but the E8400 beats it at games and encoding music and stuff.

therefore for the stuff your doing, it would perform better.

that is how i worked it out as well

e8400 for gaming, it is better than the older equivalent older version, because it uses the new 45nm manufacturing process, but the 6600 wins in terms of multi tasking video editing and such

Why don't you read his post? He said overclocking doesn't interest him, so why suggest the E8400 based on it being able to overclock better? He also said he won't be playing much games.

So the Q6600 is the obvious choice for what's available now.

it doesnt matter if he doesnt overclock. it still runs cooler and stuff. unless he's majorly multitasking and rendering stuff, an E8400 will be better for him

I agree with KUZBA about the IF HE IS multitasking and rendering stuff he should get the Q6600, if he is not doing that get the 8400.

Who cares if it runs cooler? If he isn't planning on overclocking, then temps shouldn't bother him, as long as his temps are decent and his CPU's stable (which should be no problem at stock speeds...even with Intel HSF) then he'll be fine, and get what he wants.

Now what I'm really curious is about this "other stuff." You say it runs cooler....and "other stuff"....what other stuff? Does it look breakfast for me...or...perhaps do my homework? (BOTH!?!?)

Anyways, the BIG thing to remember...is if the software he'll be using is multi-threaded. If he (or someone else) can find that out, then I think his CPU selection would be a lot easier.

P.S. I wasn't trying to be a jackass about the "stuff" thing...it's jsut that (A) it's 2 in the morning, (B) I'm really hungry and want some damn waffles, (C) I have homework that needs to be done, and most importantly (C), I'm going snowboarding tomorrow yeaaaaaaaah.

Okay I'm done.

I dont really preform one high intensive process, I just run lots of different ones at the same time, eg i my have lots of different applications open at the same time running different things.
