I am replacing my old motherboard and processor and I want to use the same hard drive for now. Can someone give me some help on what I need to do to make this work? I don't want to loose any of my files.

Back up your files or use the old HDD as a slave and buy a new master HDD. Once you replace the motherboard, the system does not recognize the boot config file and therefore won't boot.

I will try that but I am not sure how to use more than one drive. Will I have to install windows on the new drive?

Back up all your files on the old drive. You will need a fresh install of your OS on either the old HD or the new one.

As for multiple drives, if it's ide you will have to set the jumpers correctly (master or slave). If it's SATA there or no jumpers but possible a BIOS config that will have to be set. I don't remember.

Good luck!!

Ok one more question. My hard drive is a IDE drive but my new motherboard only has one IDE plug. How can I hook up both my hard drive and my DVD Rom?

the ide cable will have 3 plugs on it.

1 for the motherboard, and the other 2 for the devices like the harddrive and dvd drive.

Yes it has three plugs but it isnt long enough. I guess I will have to go buy a longer cable. Also which one do Iset as slave and which one master?

You can probably just leave the old HDD the way it is and just configure the new SATA drive to boot first (You do that in BIOS)
