These are the kinda people who shouldn't offer advice. I'm not going to deny (or agree) here but give this first time builder some facts. Some straight facts. Not that iNtel is just better.

4 project CIA:

We are definetly going to need a budget, as MBgraphics specified. So just post up the amount of do' you got in that rubberband so we can help. Its basically the only thing that is holding us back.

Also, what will the comp be used for? Gaming? Web browsing? General tasks? Graphics intensive applications?

My opinion:

Get Vista
Get 4 GB of RAM (if needed)
Get Intel
Finding 64bit drivers isn't that bad at all.

I also disagree with computeruler. This is the second time I have seen an incomplete altogether answer for a question. If you want a high post count fine, but just take your time at least.

I would get a computer with 4gb ram, vista home premium (benefits outweigh xp IMO), dual core cpu at least, and 32 bit. I have had a lot of bad stories with 64 bit..

If he's going to get 4Gb of RAM...then he should get a 64Bit OS. I'm running Vista Home Prem. 64 here, and I haven't had any issues. Everyone told me that finding drivers would be hard, blah blah, etc, but I haven't had any problems.

(although you do have to go into the options and turn off some driver enforcement crap sometimes).

I don't know what kind of horror stories everyone's getting with 64-bit vista but I'm surely not. All you have to do is READ the labels of items you're buying to see if they're compatible with vista-64. Seriously guys, it's really not that hard.
