    Does the Nvidia card show up in bios under Graphics card Information? This may be a long shot but you could try a factory reset (load defaults) of your bios.

    Is the 6pin connector outputing power to the video card? I have had this problem in the past was always bios settings, you should have the option to select both PCI & Onboard Graphics Controller

    There is also a setting in the bios that autostarts on system shutdown, might want to check that.

    this^ Sounds like heatsink/cpu clearance is not being met by the thermal paste. Clean and replace with the old thermal pads or buy new.

    You can always use linux. Otherwise I would stick with XP lot less memory intensive compared to vista.

    A good heatsink/thermal paste will work just as good as liquid coolers. I was always a fan of zalman fans and artic silver thermal compound. Of course your case will play a big roll in how air moves through your case to cool your components
