Upgrading half my computer, would this be wise?

To answer the question about the aftermarket cooler, if you are not over-clocking, the stock cooler will be just fine. Lots of recommendations being made without knowing what you do with your computer. I say go with the components that you have listed (especially if the i7 4790K drops in...

    windows 7 product key question

Ahh now the question is, is your grand daughter a student? If no student works, I suggest buying it from one of the reputable places that was mentioned already.

    windows 7 product key question

If you are a student, you may be able to acquire it through your school. Or at least buy it at discount from Microsoft.

    Gaming set up

The problem with suggesting mice and keyboards is that everyone of us have different size hands and what is good for one may feel awful to someone else. Try reading a few reviews on the gaming keyboard and mice. My son bought a gaming keyboard that came with its own gaming mouse but decided to...

    Is this an ok build?

Where the OP is from, has nothing to do with the reply to where I was quoted. Practical depends on what a person NEEDS/WANTS and HOW MUCH MONEY the person has. What is practical for one is not practical to all. Read the very first post and you can see that the OP is considering the i74790K...

    Is this an ok build?

Oh I do understand, but there are those times when an optical drive makes things so much easier (Especially for burning an ISO). As for cases not coming with external drive bays, I say that many cases do come with them :) When I can buy an i7 4790K for $279 and i7 4770K for $179, it is very...

Windows 7 install on windows 8 machine help!

Oh, I forgot to mention that you state that the computer powers on and then powers off after about 2-3 seconds. That is often the sign of an overheated CPU. Might help to check that out.

    new to ram disk

I think in your other thread that you said you went ahead with the 64GB and Ramdisk. When everything is together and you've used it, please inform if Ramdisk continues to make sense in the days of SSD and 7200rpm HDDs. Back in the 5400rpm HDD days, it did come in handy.

I think we came to the same conclusion on the GTX970. :) It had nothing to do with not approving, we all can only make suggestions :)

    Is this an ok build?

It's a good build though I always include a DVD/CD drive for $10 bucks more. Many people say there is no need for i7 without knowing what the computer will be used for. I will only do a new build using i7. Of course it helps that I live near a Micro Center where the i7's are frequently on sale.

    don't know password

Have you tried burning a 32-bit ISO on to CD and booting with that?? I'm also guessing that the restore disc (they came with them back then) didn't happen to be in the things that you were given.

You are correct. I don't know why I was thinking it was much older non-SATA hard drive.

    Gaming set up

A good gaming keyboard and mouse will make a world of difference also. You are going to bust that $10K budget if you want all 4 four monitors to run at 60fps max at high resolution. We are talking 4 each of the Titan X. You said that you will stick with 64GB RAM and that is fine but I highly...

    First custom computer build opinions/suggestions

If you live near a Micro Center store, take advantage of their CPU/Motherboard deals and like the others said, 600 watt PSU is plenty for the parts you have picked out so far. See if possible to add a SSD.

Need help deciding a new graphics card

VGA provides the lowest resolution from all of the ways to connect. DVI, DVI-D, Displayport, and HDMI much better. I only go the displayport path.

    Which brand 970?

I'm guessing you have your computer positioned where you see its insides all the time. If looks take priority of over performance, then the "blue" one is the way to go. Of course, somewhat that is good at dissembling and painting can get any look they want from any component.

    don't know password

Give the product key for the computer that you will be doing the fresh install on. ISO is simple, burn it, and set boot to the CD drive and you are good to go.

    don't know password

If you have a product key....may be on side of PC if prebuilt. You can download an ISO of Win 7 on anther PC and use it to do fresh install.
