Sounds like a power supply to me. I had one go out on a compaq and if you beat the computer it would turn on but only long enough to show the bios splash screen.

I have the q9450 and the 8800GT and can barely play w/o lag with high settings and 4x AA. I would say if you want more you are crazy, but a new GPU is your best bang for the buck performance wise.
