    2.8 Ghz or 3.0Ghz??

2.8c Thanks for all of your input guys. I've decided to go with a 2.8C with 2 sticks of 256MB PC3200 ram. I'll be overclocking with air cooling, so I'll see how fast I can get it. I've seen on some websites the processors pushing 3.5ghz on air cooling. I doubt if I'll drive it that hard...

    533Mhz FSB or 800Mhz

How big of a difference would a 800mhz FSB in a P4 processor be compared to a 533Mhz FSB P4 processsor that will be used for number crunching? It operation will take months, so would the 800mhz make a huge difference compared to the 533mhz FSB?

Computer does not start for more than 1 second

I had this exact same problem when I built my computer. Make sure your power on calbe and reset cable isn't switched. The problem is in power cables. I think the board manufacturer got the chart messed up, becasue I just had to mess around with the power cables, and it finally started up. I can...

    Wireless Blues

If you are connecting directly to your desktop computer, then make sure both of the cards are in Ad-Hoc mode. If you have more computers on your network, get an access point. To take full advantage of your G card in your laptop, get a wireless G access point, but wireless B should work also...

Sooo... are you saying I should go with a P4 or a Celeron?

    2.8 Ghz or 3.0Ghz??

So then, is clock speed all that matters? I know that P4 are more expensive that Celerons because they have a higher FSB and Cache. Are these not important for number crunching?! I figured the P4 outperforms the Celeron anyday, no matter what the application is.

Sorry, but I don't have the $25,000 for the board and software. Other suggestions?

    2.8 Ghz or 3.0Ghz??

I'm looking to build a couple of computers that will be made for number crunching. (Prime factoring numbers hundreds of digits long.) Since it will take months to complete, should I go with a 2.8 Ghz P4, or a 3.0 Ghz P4? Will it really make THAT much of a time difference? Also, would a 800Mhz...

    my custom built computer

$600.00 If he doesn't know how to build one, (which I'm assuming is the case) charge $800. It's still worth it.

    operating server for server

I would suggest using Linux. There are many different forms of linux out there, and many are made for specific server applications. (Web server, program server, cache server, storage server, etc.) You can go to www.linux.org and there will be a database of different linux distributions and links...

    Number Crunching CPU

My friend and I want to build a computer or two that will handle huge math problems. Pretty much, we're going to taste the water of theoritical computing. So, which processor or processors would be the best for number crunching? 1. Intel P4 2. AMD Athalon XP+ 3. AMD Athalon 64bit 4. Dual...

Is this good for gaming? I know nothing about motherboards.

Sounds pretty good to me. However, I haven't really heard much about Biostar boards. I'm running a XFX Force NF4-ALH or something like that. XFX boards are made for graphics and gaming. You you can, I would suggest going with XFX. But hey, it's your money...

    Best computer for number crunching?

My friend and I are wanting to build a computer for stritctly number crunching. (More specifially, finding a prime number for huge, huge numbers.) We will be making fast computers, plus try to get a distributing computer network too. (Other computers will share the CPU load.) So, my question is...
