New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

A year and a half later, this computer is still chugging along! That's a total of over 3 years since the original build, and the little computer that could is still rock solid. That said, she's been demoted to mainly a media PC since I got a PS4. I do still play some Cities: Skylines on it...

    Going Beyond PC speaker setup

I would highly suggest looking at other brands besides Bose. You can usually do much better in terms of sound quality for the price of Bose systems. I personally use M-Audio AV40s and they're great for $150-$200. Audioengine A5s also get great reviews, and is the same price as the Companion 5...

    Which SSD to go with?

I have the 850 PRO and it's insanely fast. My computer cold boots faster than my old laptop can wake up from sleep mode. The 256GB or 512GB versions fits in your budget (512 is $10 over on Amazon).

    Experience with Noctua?

Depends on how important quiet computing is to you. Yes, they are expensive, and they have funny color schemes, but they make pretty much the best fan in terms of dba/cfm and general quality. I have a single NF-A14 PWM cooling my entire computer right now, and it's completely silent unless you...

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Thanks :good: I thought that at first, but I've been using it every day for almost 2 year and it hasn't had a hiccup. If you look around, people have run 120+ watt cards - GTX 960 - off of the 160XT (with some splicing to make a 6-pin connector). It's amazing how much power this little guy can...

    Quick rather stupid sounding question.

You're going to create a bunch of turbulence as the two fans won't sync up correctly. It'll probably sounds quite loud and won't produce that great of results. Any reason you want to do this in the first place?

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Alright it's been almost a year and time for an update! I have replaced the HD 7750 with an EVGA GTX 750 Ti 2GB card. Man this little card is fast for 60 watt TDP! I can play almost any game at medium/high settings at 1080p now. I also threw on an Arctic Accelero S1 Plus heatsink to keep...

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Never said my build was. My previous post is saying that it's possible to build powerful and quiet computers (much more powerful than mine that is).

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Yup, the little airflow the front 140mm fan provides actually does wonders at cooling the CPU and GPU. Right now I'm browsing the web and listening to music, the fan is running at 650 rpm and my CPU is at 41C. And I encourage you to experiment with a build like this! I see lots of people...

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Well, an update for everyone on my little experiment. Half a year later, the computer still works! I've used it every day, watching Netflix, playing games, browsing the web, and it's still chugging along! In fact, now that I'm out of the Kansas heat, my fan generally stays below 600 rpm for...

Recommend me a good passive heat sink for i7 4770K...

How about get a CPU heatsink with a fan, and then take 10 fans out of the case :).

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

Update. I changed out the current fan to a Noctua PWM 140mm fan with higher cfm and static pressure (Noctua NF-A14 PWM). It's about the same loudness as my old Noctua fan, but it puts out more air and keeps the whole computer cooler. I've been running 4 core Prime95 for the past 30 minutes and I...

Recommend me a good passive heat sink for i7 4770K...

Jesus 16 fans??? I guess we have polar opposite systems, as I only have 1 fan in my entire computer! :P And you're best just getting a large tower style heatsink with a 120mm fan. It'll likely be cheaper than large passive heatsinks and will give you better temperatures.

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

So after running and gaming on the system for a bit over a month...here's a progressive report (and some pictures)! It works! The computer runs perfectly with reasonable temperatures. CPU maxes out in the 50s while gaming and so does the graphics card. The computer is very quiet (it's only...

New rebuild - Silent medium duty gaming rig

We'll have to see ;). I switched the graphics card out to a 7750, which uses less power and is more powerful than the 6770. Every little bit helps.

2/27/15 Update New GPU and SSD. GTX 750 Ti 2GB Samsung 850 Pro 256GB --------- Original Post I just ordered parts for a partial rebuild of my current rig! After doing some PS3 gaming, I realized I simply cannot stand controllers for FPS games. GTAV is great, but shooters are...

    Media PC build

Ok. Got the rest of the parts today and the computer is done! Here's a picture of it with the much bigger Scythe Shuriken heatsink. The PicoPSU 160xt is working wonderfully. It puts out more power than the stock PSU and it doesn't have a fan! I'm running the Noctua 80mm fan at 1300rpm and...

    Media PC build

So I got the rig up and running! Here's a picture: Overall the computer is working pretty well. Windows 8 is weird, I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it yet. A better cooling system is arriving tomorrow, including a Scythe heatsink (checked online, it actually fits), Noctua 80mm fan, picopsu...
