Would like some tips on compressong files as much as possible without quality loss

Regular data you can zip them, but music and movies you need to rip them at a lower bit rate. If your music is in the mp3 format, then they are already compressed about as small as they can get. If it is wav files then rip them to mp3, and they will be about 10 to 15 percent smaller, but will...

    Two different 3.5 hard drives

Just the way the manufactures of the External Drives have them set up. The Seagate probably never totally spins down. Many External Drives don't spin down. A few do allow the Drive to spin down after inactivity.

    Pagefile not going away.

When you disable the page file on C drive, Windows does not delete the file. The File may not be in use, but will stay there until you delete it manually.

SP1 enabled Large Hard Drive support. I got a couple XP SP1 computers with 2 terabyte drives. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013 If you google enable 48 bit Addressing on XP you can find a small download that can reset the registry key if that key is messed up.

Windows can't shut down a External Drive Enclosures Power Supply, because the Power Supply is not connected to the PC's Motherboard. Soundcard inputs-Line in input V RCA sockets

If you want to make CD's out of your vinyl records, rip the records to the Hard Drive in a wave format. Then burn them to a CD. You can delete the wave format when done, or compress to some other format to store on a computer. If you want the CD's to have individual tracks, you have to baby sit...

    Key to shut down

A keyboard shortcut for the "Safely Remove Hardware", can be made with AutoHotKey that I know works with XP, but if the USB Drive is Powered by a external power Supply, then that can't be turned off. They do make external Drives that do not have external power supply's, and are just powered by...

Soundcard inputs-Line in input V RCA sockets

RCA jacks don't have much to do with it. They make some good Sound Cards that don't have RCA jacks. Probably even a Sound Card built into the motherboard will do a good enough job unless you are a real audiophile. Link is to a good sound Card that is designed to hook up to Stereo Systems. I...

seeing java up on the news about a nasty virus

I heard about this on the National Nightly News a couple weeks ago, so I would guess Java have been patched by now. Though the patch will only be as good as the Hackers ability to patch their Java Hack,:) Java has always been a bit of a Security risk. I have not even had it installed in a...

    Key to shut down

You can also use a freeware app called AutoHotKey. This program allows you to save a script to the Startup Folder. I never tried it in Windows 7, but it works in XP. So for Example, the Program will allow you to save a "shortcut.ahk" file to the Startup Folder. So if you used F1 to Shut Down...
