Wow Chrome Sure Spead Up My Web Surfing Switched from Firefox Have Windows 7 O/S

The reason chrome is fast is because it loads as it receives the webpage, i.e. when the first half downloads t goes to the screen right away. IE tries to get everything ready before displaying. In ad-free pages if you use a stopwatch to time until IE stops loading and Chrome stops loadng, IE...

    Show off your speed

I used my current anti-blocking mechanisms and did the test: Tor: Freegate 7.05p: (upload speed dubious? Though I know that the service compresses and encrypts GET requests...) FreeU 1.4: (Somebody told me that it uses PGP all the way, without AES. This is probably why it never gets...

    Computer Tips Of The Day

Always make sure your monitor is at native res!!! I often get people with 1024x768 on a 1280x1024 screen. Second tip: Never install IE shells which proclaim themselves as "Faster & Safer Than IE!" Edit: Third Tip: Never buy "VPN" packages to unblock in China. Free software like T o r...

    Show off your speed

I'm using a gigabit connection distributed with a big LAN in our entire community. Ping is absolutely fast. Community LAN has no "rating" except for a gig per neighborhood. Best thing about that is that you need no modem :) Edit: Uh oh! I gave away my location!

What annoys you the most about email?

The worst thing about e-mail is how easy it is to spoof "from" and "to". I made a php program to demonstrate: http://kna.allaboutstuff.net/spoofmail

    Router faster than broadband???

In china we have "community broadband", which is a ~1 gigabit connection connected to an ENORMOUS router in the basement of the apartment and connected to the homes of the entire community. My community is relatively empty, and I get ~5 Mbps, but I've heard of people using 512k ADSL because...

What Web Browser Do You Use?

I teach computer science in my homeschool co-op, and I let people try out IE 6 with smooth scrolling and without it without telling them what I did. Most people thought that I somehow sped up the browser when I turned off the smooth scrolling. My point? Smooth scrolling feels subjectively slow...

    The Future of Computers

Graphic design jobs...well, they can use KDE, which has plenty of cool photo/graphic apps. And anybody can use GIMP. I edit videos for my homeschool co-op (I'm 13), and guess what platform I use? FreeBSD 8.1. You need to wake up and see that Mac no longer has any advantage in graphic and design...

    The Future of Computers

No. Computers develop WAY faster than other tech. Just watch 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Other tech are more advanced than that of the real 2010, but computers, well, worse than Pentium 4's.

    The Future of Computers

This is CNN News reporting. On July 5 2032 the house of Joe Smith was hacked by a team of hackers, apparently from a Chinese malware company. We will now interview Smith on the videophone. CNN: "Hello Smith?" Smith: "Hi. The day before yesterday I drove back from work in my old manually...

    The Future of Computers

Well, I could fix that, in 2010...:) In fact, if you don't want to connect 10+ terminals, you could just use a Pentium 4. Or even a laptop. Just recently I actually ran FreeBSD on our Pentium 4 and made a netbook a terminal via WLAN. If the Internet ever gets as fast as Wireless LAN, then we can...

    The Future of Computers

I mean, if I had a gigabit worldwide internet connection, I could make use of my old Pentium 4 and create TONS of terminals as slow as the iPad. And wireless power supplies...they wouldn't cook you. http://wapedia.mobi/en/Inductive_charging (the only reason I use mobile phone wikipedia is...

    favorite netbook OS

I think that Kubuntu Netbook 10.04 really ROCKS. It uses no double-clicks, and would also perform great for an i386 iPad (if that kind of thing exists). The interface is KDE Plasma netbook, which has an official screenshot: Beautiful, right?

    The Future of Computers

But remember, in my timeline we would have cyborgs by 2035...if you can call that "cyborg". We could hook up weapons and telescopes to a backpack/hat computer, and viola, a cyborg.
