Hey, my new 120Gb drive is gonna be delivered tomorrow and im gonna set it up as a slave to my existing master 80Gb with windows on it.

Im just owndering what you think is thebest approach of formatting it??? I have Partition Magic 8 Pro installed, but im not sure if it will actually see the drive at all before its been formatted.

Or perhaps i should take my 80Gb out and just have the 120Gb in and format it using my bootable windows98 disk, although i would like it to be in NTFS rather than FAT32.

Any hints, or perhaps programs to use....... thanks.

Install it... load up into windows... My Computer > Right click on new drive > format > choose desired options... done! :)

If you're going to use it as a slave drive, just install it with the jumper set to slave. Boot up Windows, you wont see the new drive in My Computer just yet. So go into Control Panel> Administrative tools> Computer Management> Disk Management. There you see you new drive and you can make a partition right there. After that, you'll see the drive in My Computer and you can format it. Have fun! :D

When i installed a new hard drive it showed up in windows... well if it doesnt, then i would boot of your windows cd and create a partition on that drive, then go into windows and format it.

Yeah, either way will work. When ever we get new HD's, they're usually not partitioned yet. Some retail versions will come with their own install disks too... More people friendly.

ok, i thought there must be a simple way but havent ever installed a secondary drive, ive always only had one, thanks for the quick replys guys.

thanks everyone, couldnt have been more simple. Plugged it in, both drives on cable select.... dammit got the cable the wrong way round, nevermind, change boot order round.....load windows up, disk management, 115.7Gb unalocated space, right click FORMAT, next, next, next, NTFS, FORMAT..... 20 mins later..... DONE.

Although it did nick a whopping 9 Gb on format, i knew it took some due to filesystem and all that but 9Gb!!! Ive now got a 110.8Gb drive. (Actually its 186Gb due to my other 80Gb in there aswell, he he.

thanks for your help, dragon2309

Its because the hard drive mfg's say a gigabyte is 1,000MB, when its really 1,024MB. So a 120"GB" hard drive is really ~114GB.

yeh, i know it took some cos of all that being different i was just surprised when it came out and was nearly 10Gb smaller, i expected like 5 Gb tops to be lost.
