im with bt yahoo broadband and i have a limit of 4gig for download and i knwo for a fine fact that i have downloaded more than this. and they havent cut me off and i havent bee charged for it. does anyone know why this is? could they be waiting for me and then hit me with a charge or cancel my account, how does this work.

ive spoke to them before and they i asked out of curiosty what would happen if i downloaded to much and they said they would lock my account. could they have overlooked mine? any ideas? thanks!!!

I once worked for an mini-ISP that will remain nameless  and being a net admin I wasn't too concerned with people who maxed out their download cap if it was within reasonable limits. I would, however, pay close attention to people who blew past that cap and would then have someone notify them that they had exceeded their limit.

I wouldn't be too concerned as they should be courteous enough to call you if you’re going overboard. Hopefully your traffic is nothing that would be anything of concern in legal matters, but it's really not a set in stone cap meaning that once you hit it, right to the byte, you’re locked out. Most big ISPs are lenient on their caps unless you really over do it.

thats cool to here man but i think i may have went 6 gig over the limit. and thats why im concerned! so do they know what im downloading? or can they just see the traffick? i work as a vj and download videos, its all legit but i have downloaded a lot. see i find this strange. and to be honest im a bot scared aswell. i havent downloaded for a month or so i feel like someting is about to happen. :(

Since the caps are reset monthly, I don't think you have anything to worry about since you haven't downloaded anything big in a month :D.

I'm not too familiar with Yahoos policies but I guess they could monitor your traffic if they so decided to, but you would be a needle in a haystack so to say since you would really have to draw their attention to monitor you. If you are downloading all legit material, you don't have anything to worry about.

thank you, ive paided hundreds of pounds for what ive downloaded and cant afford bills. i should hopefully be changing isp soon so i wont have to worry about it, but thanks for you time. i need some uncapped limit to be on the safe side, so can they see what im downloading? actaul content?

Feasibly, no. They would literally have to rebuild each packet that was transferred from the server you’re downloading from to your machine. All they see is the source and destination if even that. Some ISPs don't even bother to log everything since the logs would be far too large to manage.

Yeah that makes sense, i mean how many people do you think would be with BT yahoo. many i reckon. but yeah thats cool. i dont really get what they do. but its making ore sense now. thanks man!

so what wa sthe job like? didnt sound like you liked it? thanks man! ;)

Chances are if they havent done anything, it was soft capped. NTL's 1mb line used to hard capped, so if you went a few MB over the limit they would phone you up to tell you not to do it.

i see so because i havent went over by say 50gig or something stupid like that, they dont care? thats cool, im just trying to calm the download untill i get my new isp.

even a few mb? thats crazy like how many? 50 or so? thats well hard? whats the point of capping? is it just the business side? so that you may upgrade?

thanks for your time!!! :D

Yea, they were strict with the 1mb people. but when they upped the speed of the 2mb and 3mb to 4 and 10mb, they upped the soft cap to 75GB /month. But they admitted the couldn't keep track of what people were doing and couldn't enforce the cap, so they've now scrapped the cap for every service, which is good.

TBH, i think it is more to do with business. They had some people that would og crazy and download upto 1TB a month on the soft cap (which is a crazy amount of download), and it was those that got phone calls and letters from them.

Na, I liked the job...hated the people. It finally got to the point where they would start doing things without running it by me first, so what’s the point of being a net admin if you can't administer .

Now I work for a few local schools and do some work for a few datacenters, so I'm happy now :). I'll have to post some pix of the hardware on the racks.

Good luck to ya!!!

Mark

datacenter

Yeah, whats the point of people aint doing what they ment to. its office politics that what i find, its cool that you got a new job and that!!! i'd like to see the pictures man!

i'd love to work in IT but i have no specific area as of yet. i'll keep trying. thanks man! and good luck to you too!!! :D

i regards to limit's i have 2 gig a month aswell, through wanadoo, occasionally i will download a lot of stuff, for example at the beginning of this month i decided to startusing linux (that lasted, what, all of 3 days) so i downloaded 64bit version (700mb) then couldn't get my printer to work with 64 bit, so downloaded the server version, as i thought it would be the same, and had apache etc. but then i found that it didn't have a gui (another 500mb) so downloaded the 32 bit of ubuntu (700mb) and stuck with that for a couple of days, then yesterday went back to windows, and earlier i downloaded the photoshop trial (300mb), that is 2.2GB in just a few days, i have gone well over the limit but i never get cut off, and on the wanadoo, i mean orange website it is only a guidance, so they don't really set a strict limit
