ok so i was wanting to know the stock Alienware M17x laptop is $1,799. i want to buy a good gaming laptop.. one that can play all the games out now and the new games to come.. i would like to play these games on the best graphics if possible.

now is the asking price for the stock m17 worth that much ? here are the specs.

Intel® CoreTM i7 740QM (1.73GHz/6MB cache),
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
17-inch WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 (900p)
4GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
320GB4 SATA II hard drive (RPM) (7200RPM)
1024 (MB) ATI HD5870 Mobility RadeonTM
Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-Card

now i want to know a couple things.
with this computer just stock do you think it could run Starcraft 2 at the highest graphic settings with no lag?? even on 2v2 in a 30 min game? (a lot of units/stuff going on)

could it run fps like black ops or modern warfare 2 at highest graphic setting with no lag?

this list could go on but ill get a good idea of what this computer can handle with these 3 games.

one last thing i may have enough money to upgrade this a lil .. if i can what upgrade would make the biggest difference in performance for gaming?

i could possibly get duel 1024 (MB) ATI HD5870 Mobility RadeonTM graphic cards which adds $450 to the price i believe..

or i could upgrade the processor to this Intel® Core™ i7 840QM Quad Core Processor, 1.86GHz (3.20GHz Turbo Mode, 6M Cache) for $625 more.

i think the graphics card upgrade would be better but correct me if im wrong.. also how big of a difference would each of these upgrades make for gaming?

i may also upgrade the screen to this 17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p) for $200 more ... but let me know what you all think..

THANKS!:good:

yes that laptop can play SC2 @ highest settings, and for black ops and warfare 2 you could max it out but i dont know if you will lag or not. HD5870 Mobility GPU is only about 60% of the true 5870 performance.you know that you could build a badass desktop for that kind of money, which by the way would future proof your investment.if you got a custom built computer(you build yourself) you could upgrade everything in it as you go through time.laptop on the other hand is limited on the upgrade ability, as in only the CPU,RAM,HDD and the DVD/CD Drive can be upgraded. you would be stuck with the HD5870 Mobility GPU which will only maxes out games at the moment(theres no future proof there).but by all means, if thats where your hearts at get it. GL!

thanks for your replay!!! i have thought about what your saying.. but i need a laptop for school and i just like the thought of being able to take my games with me on trips... the way i see it is it should last me 3-5 years (hopefully)... that time would be better for me to either build my own desktop or to upgrade the one i have (dramatically). or buy a gaming desktop ..

basically i was going to get a cheap laptop just for school.. but then i started thinking my computer can't play hardly any games anymore.. it can barley handle starcraft 2 at lowest settings.... so now i need a better computer for gaming and a laptop.. so might as well buy both at once.. LOL!
