i have a 30 gig ipod video and i hate itunes. maybe i'm not using it correctly, but it automatically sorts the music files on my ipod and puts them in stupid spots. it breaks apart albums that have songs that feature other artist. i want something that i can organize the ipod myself and simply drag and drop music files onto it. is this possible?

would windows explorer work. Thats what i use for my mp3 player. Just brouse to the place where your music is and drag and drop between folders.

As far as I am aware (not iPod owner - refuse to join that one...) if you plug the iPod in to use as external hard drive, then you can drag and drop.

However, when plugged in with iTunes running this will automatically sync with your 'Pod. Again, AFAIK, you cannot change the way that iTunes archives stores your music.
Having looked through the preferences menu, there appears to be no option to change it to store by album title, for example...

As I don't own one, this is purely what I've observed from the sister in law - not sure exactly how the iPod shows in Windows Explorer...

You can view the folders that itunes put your music in if you allow secret files and folders to be viewed. In My Documents click tools, folder options, view tab, then click show hidden files and folders. But they never have the songs filename so i doubt (unless you hear each one) you will know what they are by looking at them!

i can view in windows explorer all the songs but there are like 50 different folders and all the songs are all scrambled up.

Apart from Apple's good support and technical knowledge, i can't see you missing out on much, so if i was in your situation then this would certainly be an option i would keep open.:)

PS - Looks nice!;)

never called apple since i got the thing

The Creative Zen was the original hardware with the UI that Apple have comandeered for their iPod range... They couldn't get the patent for it sorted (or something like that). Personally, I have settled for one of the other competitors out there (Archos) and they have an excellent, if a little bulky, range of multimedia players out there. They offer true plug and play too, cos if I'm at a friend's house and I like a track/album on their PC, then I can install the player from its self-contained autoplay file and drag and drop! Vive la revolution!

winamp

songbird

vlc

helix

real networks (open source media player)

Tons of apps out there have plug ins for ipods, and on top of that most of them are open source. Just google and you can find more info.

all i'm looking for is something that'll allow me to organize the music my way and is easy to transfer from pc to player

itunes has an option to allow you to organize your music, this should turn off any kind of auto fill function it does the meta data of your audio files.

under options somewhere i don't use itunes but have specifically done this in the past for people i know who have the same problem you are.

That button is for the menu in your ipod, it puts your music into songs and albums when on your ipod screen. It is automaticaly on when you install Itunes.
Try clicking on preferences then the importing tab, then uncheck create filenames with track number, i don't know whether it'll work it was just a random guess!

ok i launched itunes on my mac and looked into it.......

Its under general preferences, there is a box called Keep my iTunes folder organized and that is the options that automatically organizes music for you. For the PC version it should pretty much be the same since they have the same UI. Its under general preferences.
