The A64 3400+ would be much better in gaming, and would actually be better then the P4 in a few other non-gaming apps. But if money is no object, the Core 2 Duo or A64 X2 would be the best choices.

I've run an 3800+ at stock clock and a P4 650 @ 3.74GHz. Overall I'd go with the AMD but it's a tough choice. In gaming my P4 machine might have had a slight edge but it was paired with a better video card so that was the reason. The Athlons were usually spoken as being better gaming chips then the P4's. I wish I had the same card in the two computers at some point to really have compaired the chips. Everyday tasking wasn't enough of a difference to notice really. My 3800+ has been running for a long, long time though so If I had to pick between the two for single core I'd go with AMD. What are you trying to do, make the fastest single core machine you can? The AM2 4000+ is $99 on newegg....probably a good gaming chip when paired with good graphics card.

The Athlon is $20 cheaper though... so if you are debating which to get you could get a somewhere between a 3400+ and a 4000+ for the same price.
