ATI Radeon X850XT PE and VGA monitor?

Hopefully someone with more technical knowledge than myself can help me with this one.

Just got a new Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, have been buying parts for months and could finally assemble the system. Once done, I turn on the power, everything looks good, fans spinning etc, but the monitor indicates no video signal! The screen is an old crappy VGA monitor (Gateway EV700) that I'm looking to replace next month but I'd like to get things working before then!

Now, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon X850XT PE with two DVI outputs (no VGA) and I'm using a pretty simple DVI to VGA converter plug. Could it be a simple issue of monitor and video signal incompatibility or do I need to look further than that? The graphics card is firmly in the PCI-E slot, I've attached the video card power cable and the fan is spinning. Is there anything I have missed in the installation?

The motherboard has no onboard graphics, so I can't just unplug the card to make sure that everything else is working fine.

Here are the specs:
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 630 2M 800FSB
2 x 1GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 800
ATI Radeon X850XT Platium Edition PCI-E 256MB
Creative E-MU 0404 sound card
Samsung HD080HJ 80GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive
Some NEC DVD+-RW :P
Terrible Gateway EV700 monitor :)

Would appreciate any help you can give me!

Try using the other DVI port, and if you have one, another DVI to VGA converter.

Also, if you have another monitor you may want to try that.
