ati2dvag.dll error - ATI Mobility Radeon

I have an IBM Thinkpad R32 running XP Professional with service pack 2. My video adapter is an ATI Mobility Radeon

I was watching a movie, which I rarely do and the screen froze and gave me an error indicating that the driver (ati2dvag.dll) was no longer available. I rebooted by machine and it started in safe mode which I have been unable to get out of. I have gone into the device manager to see if it was a simple re-install driver or upgrade to a newer driver but it says I already have the most current driver available. I have tried to change the back to more than 256 colors but I get a stop error: 0X0000008E along with some others listed with it.

Anyone with some experience with this one? I am able to run in safemode but cannot open any jpg files. Very limited abilities at this point.

I have not updated any drivers intentionally since I have had this unit. I have had it about a year. Does XP look for updated drivers in the background that I should worry about?
