BioShock DirectX 10 vs DirectX 9 Performance and Image Quality

Here are some benchmarks for BioShock in DX9 and DX10 modes

1600.gif

1920.gif

2560.gif

They did the benchmarks on windows Vista using Nvidia and ATI latest beta drivers. It seems that there is no difference in terms of performance between DX9 and DX10

Why is the 2900 so miserable?

I was hoping upon hope that things would improve for the 2900 once games started using dx10.......

I'd really like to get a 2900 for it's onboard audio and HDMI capability, but those results are so poor.... i'm disappointed.

You also have to keep in mind that the 2900XT is only $390, while the 8800 Ultra is upwards of $600.

Yeah, but i saw the 640MB 8800gts on sale this afternoon for just over $305.00, and the 320MB version for $251.00 and BOTH of them run ****ing circles around the 2900.

Not only that, but the 2900 in the test was the $500 1GB model! Not the 512.

Sorry, i just checked, and the 320MB gts is $244.00, not 251, and it's the superclocked evga version, too.

This is only in one test though, I still think that the 2900 XT is better than the 8800GTS. Check this link for better benchmarks:

Note the difference in 3DMark06 scores.

3dmark is a joke (Edit: Because 3dmark doesn't tell you which video card is better)

Why you don't check gaming benchmarks ??

It seems that 8800GTS 320MB won in 4 games, while HD2900XT won only in 2 games

And it seems that 8800GTS 640MB and 320MB got better overall FPS

By the way, I'm not saying that 8800GTS is better, but what I'm saying is that 8800GTS and HD2900XT are very close in terms of gaming performance

where was this on sale? i'd snap it up for that price. in the UK for an 8800 ultra your looking at upwards of $800, i dunno where you got $600 from, its more than that on newegg

3DMark is a joke?

LOL !!! ^^^

What is the point of having high score in 3dmark ??

HD2900XT got high score in 3dmark, so what ?? Are you going to play with 3dmark :P ?? What is the point of having high score in 3dmark when HD2900XT perform worse than 8800GTS 320MB in gaming (according to tomshardware charts) ??!!

Maroon I have to say you are the biggest Nvidia fanboy I've ever seen.

Thats because you don't have any other thing to say..

My arguments were based on logic, evidence and facts.... unlike your arguments...

Instead of posting useless post like that... can you tell what did I do wrong ??!!

I asked what is the point of having high score 3dmark ?? Are you going to play with 3dmark ??

It seems that 3dmark is your fav "game" :P

According tomshardware charts 8800GTS 320MB outperformed HD2900XT in the majority of games. And I showed you that..... Is there anything wrong with that ??

And you are not an ATI fanboy ??

EDIT: If you are not an ATI fanboy then why you posted only the 3dmark benchs from tomshardware ?? Why not the the gaming benchmark ?? I think because you are an ATI fanboy...

3dmark is a kinda lame IMO. 3dmark is nothing but a point based benchmarking app, And Gpureview offers nothing but the specs of a card. if that's what you're looking for then it's great, but specs rarely tell you which card is better. You need To look at real benchmarks to figure that out. and Not *my systems better than yours, I got higher points!* 3dmark benchmarks.

Yes he is and he said that 3dmark was a joke and that gpureview was a joke to in another thread apparently he hates anything that ati/amd might excel in.
http://www.computerforum.com/95720-geforce-8400gs-good-card-4.html

First: I said that gpureview was a joke when they were comparing 7600GS and 8500GT (both were nvidia video cards !!)

Second: If you look at spec you would think that 8500GT is better than 7600GS but in gaming 7600GS outperforms 8500GT.
The same thing applied to 7600GT vs 6800Ultra and HD2900XT vs 8800

So, yea gpureview and 3dmark are joke

You need to look at gaming benchmarks, not at 3dmark or video card specs

I totally agree with you

If you don't know I've had 3 different Nvidia graphics cards and 2 ATI ones, and so far the ATI cards I've had have been more stable and overclock better.... and I don't know why all of the sudden everyone is flaming 3DMark, because it has been the standard benchmark for a long time. I guess when one person decides that 3DMark is shit, then everyone else seems to follow.

I posted the 3DMark score since most people know of 3DMark and what it takes to get a good score. Now there is no need to get angry with me without knowing that I have had a lot of experience with nvidia (especially with their customer support because 2 of the cards died).

The point of testing in 3DMark is NOT because it's a game, it was designed to test the strengths and weaknesses of a specific piece of hardware. Now if you have any knowledge in your apparently small head you would realize the difference between a game and a benchmark.

I'm done arguing with you, I've built a machine with a 2900XT for my close friend, as well as a computer with a 8800GTS. Yes, you are correct, they are very similar in game performance, but if you look again at the tests that the 8800 won, they are all games based on older engines (save Flight Simulator). The 2900XT won the benchmark in BF2142, Oblivion, and Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic, the latter two having some of the best graphics engines out right now.

You say you're going by the facts, so am I. If you want to bring yourself internal satisfaction by thinking that you won an argument with a 17 year old, by all means do. I'm done with you.

Bioshock really doesn't tax that much thanks to the Unreal Engine 3... I can't wait until it is updated and applied to something else...
