Broken HP Pavillion laptop screen.

Hi i just recently smashed the screen on my laptop, at first you could still use it but it has now stopped working. I thought I could plug my monitor in to it and use that but it doesn't seem to be working, I know the monitor works. Is there a setting on the computer I have to change to view another monitor? It has windows vista on it I believe, im just trying to get the pictures off it I don't think it's worth trying to fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Arggggg!!

So if I push fn-f4 ( there's a little screen on the f4 button) one would think it would switch to the other monitor. Also I disconnected the screen on my laptop, this laptop also has a remote and there's a screen button on the top of it to but nothing. I'm not sure if the remote is working because it won't turn the LT off, it's been sitting for a few years maybe it time to file it under "G"?
