can't set my Age of Empires II The Conquerors 1.0c to play on the Internet

Hello. The game is Age of Empires II The Conquerors
I try to play via GameSpy Arcade or with IP ,but I just run into message "unable to join the game".If I try to connect a computer via its IP then in about 1 of 10 do I only succeed in it and even if my computer finds the other one successfully I am still unable to join the game. I read their help on the site and it told me that this is likely because I have a router and firewall. So I thought I cannot play probably because I have to open ports to play the game. So I did. I checked on http://www.portforward.com/cports.htm what ports my game uses and went to Control Panel/Windows Firewall/Exceptions and enabled all the ports that it needs. But it didn't help. It just doesn't work :( and nothing seems to help.
Does anyone have an idea what to do? Thanx in advance.
My system:
Windows XP Professional
Award BIOS 6.00
AMD Athlon 3500++
2048 MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c

If you are behind a router, you need to tell that router that the port for AOE2 needs to be forwarded to your computer's internal IP address.

You could try getting friends to direct IP connect to you Via the Router IP (if you have a router). This IP is what you look like outside of your LAN, but inside each computer has its own IP Address.

The only way I know to find the router IP is to go here:
www.speedtest.net

It will quote an IP address and in my case it doesn't quote my Computers IP its quotes the routes IP.

hmm

I am not really in all that stuff of TCP/IP. I even don't know if I have a router or not. I have a nice box Thomson TCM425 standing near my computer . Is it a router? And I understand that probably I have to forward the ports of the game in order to play. So how can I do this? Thank's in advance.

Ok well the problem is I can’t tell you how to access your router/cable modem controls. They vary

I found this http://www.thomson.net/NR/rdonlyres/06B11758-3AB6-43A8-888B-262E67789D1F/0/TCM425_v7.pdf

Well I had a good look on the web but I couldn't find anything about how to access the admin software in the router/cable modem. Try typing in your router/cable modem IP in IE and see if you get its admin controls up.

Unless we can somehow configure it then your stuck I am afraid.

Have you tried playing with your personal firewall down?

it is no router...

I have contacted my provider and they told me that the model I have is no router, so this is no problem I think. I tried just to turn my Windows Firewall down but it didn't work then. But what is strange is that I can play sometimes-in 1 of about 5 my computer can establish connection via IP or I can be connected to by IP (which we give in the lobby of the game)...
But that of course is not a proper work of system. I opened all ports that the game might want but it doesn't help much.

The problem I had was also with my router. So if I wanted to play AoE I had to connected straight through to the modem, because no matter what I tried, I couldnt connect when I was connected via my router.
