Chatroom Help Needed

Me and a friend are suppose to be creating a chatroom but we have been realy slow starting so i'm starting now. I need to know about how chat systems work and how the servers work for chat systems. Please, I realy want to get started.

Well I don't think you can just start a chat room, I think you need a host first like yahoo, Msn etc. I don't really know and if you do want to start a chat room you need money to host it.
