Computer restarts automatically while playing game, advice please!

My computer has been restarting automatically while playing games. It started to do this after I upgrade my card to a 8800GS. I used this card to play Modern Warfare with ease, maybe a couple restarts. The real problem started when I was playing Clive Barker's Jericho. It first had a few restarts, then the restarts started to get vicious. I then tuned down the graphic settings and it was getting better. I just started Red Alerts 3, and its restarting like crazy. I turned down the video settings and its not helping that much. I dont set the game setting to high manually, I just let it default, yet it still restarts. I have a 600 watts power supply, and the cards minimum requirement is 400 watts. Should I buy a more powerful power supplies? I never had such a problem before I upgrade the card. Any advices would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like your power supply is not putting out enough. What else are you running?? Enough to overload the power supply??

That is what I thought too! but I'm not running anything else that is going to consume a lot of power. Other than the 8800 GS, I have a creative 5.1 sound card and an extra small. Maybe I should change my power supply to 1k watts huh?

How many watts is it now? Any quality PSU over 400 watts would handle your computer, assuming you don't have some insane CPU.

Have you checked your temperatures? It could be that you're overheating.
 
I am sure it is your POWER SUPPLY problem. Change to a better one and it will be resolved. :)

This might be another approach to it too, are you 100% sure all the drivers are installed correctly, that could cause you computer to shut down. Also, maybe you new graphics card is not compatible with something, check the compatibility.

If it is that you are using too much power there is ways to check how much power you are using, look up your motherboard, for example: I had an old Abit motherboard, and you could download a program called Abit-Equalizer, or Abit-EQ. This program told you everything that was going on in my computer. How much voltage is being used, how fast my fans were going, etc. Also it had some cool features, like if i stuck my finger in a fan and stopped it, it would send an email to me, on my cell phone. Look it up, do some research before buying for no reason.
 
I have an Asus board. Does anybody know any programs that can tell me whats going on with my computer? Like how many power is my computer using and etc. Thanks!
 
I was just thinking, it wouldn't be graphic card compatibility problems because it only restarts when I'm playing games. If its a graphic card compatible problem, then wouldnt it just restarts regardless if im playing game? Just a thought, please advice!

Bro,
as I mentioned earlier, it is 99% power supply problem.. Bring your PC to a PC shop an get it changed on the spot. Try the PC and see if it is the problem.
 
ic, in that case, can anyone recommend any good power supplies that can last me? The one I have obviously is poorly built, since its a 600 watts and it couldn't run a 400 watts card properly. Thanks
 
Bro,
playing games consumes lots of power. If your power supply cannot support, it will restart automatically. This is a common Power Supply problem.

I suggest that you bring your PC to a PC shop and get the vendor to recommend a suitable power supply to you and change it on the spot. Try it. If everything ok, then pay for the power supply. If not, ask the vendor to troubleshoot.

I use a corsair TX750w and the sucker is built well.

Ran 2x 8800GT till one died 2x 320gb HDs and about 5 fans I added to my PC...running a quad-core as well.

Stable and friendly. Going to be upgrading to a 4870 soon.
