Okay, my cpu was over heating, i got some thermel paste and but a little on (about the size of a grain of rice), now it turns on and will stay on but run betwwen 70-80C which is bad right,... isn't it supposed to be like 40ish

Your processor should be running at under 50C. What is your cooler? is it the stock one?

if it is something like artic silver 5 then you will need to let it run for a good while for it to set in.

yeah it is arctic silver and i did clean it as much as i could. so it might take a while, i have it running in bios and right now it is at 76 C

yeah its all stick stuff that came with the amd xp, so, yeah.... hhaha, anyway, it just went up to 90 C and then shut its self off, Should i re-clean the thermal paste, if so, any suggestions of how i should?

Is your fan working and is your heatsink coming in full contact with the cpu. Also, where are you reading 76C? If it's from a 3rd party program, try looking in the bios.

yeah i know i was in the bios watching it, when it was at 76 C and than i went to the bathroom and my roommate told me it turned off, whihc means it reached 90 C and turned it self off.. adnd the fan was working fine, as for the heat sink, its put in all the way so i don't see how it couldn't be on all the way

Ive had my AMD 3500+ And 95 degrees... Usually, AMD'S burn hotter. So yeah, it takes time for the thermal paste to set in... Give it a while...

okay i put more on haha. I also turned on off the over clock swtich on the mother board so it won't try to run so hard. now it is at 65 C so ill watch it for a while like this and see what happens.. thanks if you have any other suggesions please tell me!!

Somebody correct me on this, but doesn't the BIOS temp always go up because the extra processes aren't assigned to the System Idle processes

Ya thats true, the temps in BIOS are higher then idle temps in Windows.

The family PC has a Celeron D 2.4 @ 2.55 and it gets to around 74C under load.

I think you just might need a new heat sink. I'm kinda having the same problem as you right now. My idling temps are anywhere from 24C-45C. When Im playing games the temps go upto 60C-70C. I followed the procedures from the AS5 website carefully and I'm stil getting these temps using AS5.

Just a suggestion.. but before you start messing around with the heatsink etc again... did you try running the pc with the sidepanel removed?
that would rule out bad airflow in the case (with that i mean, the CPU cooler Fan cant get cold air from anywhere, so the CPU isnt cooled propperly :) )
also, is the heatsink clean, no dirt in it etc?

i thought intel's run hotter then amd's my intel hit 75 celcius a few times but it never cut off cuz i stoped what i was doing to run it under that load and it only hit that load when i was running games on very hot days i have my heatsink and thermal paste applied properly i just think i need to get better tower fans to help out with it.

anyways do intels run hotter then amd's or do amd's run hotter?

doesnt it take up to 3 days b4 the thermal paste kicks in?
